So, you can sell the standard engine without losing the XL. Just keep in mind that items are sold for a fraction of the cost to buy them, so unless you really need the cbills, it can be beneficial to save engines for future mechs.

You can safely sell your sexually transmitted diseased engine.
But, I think you should safely store that to the side for now, you never know when you might need it for a transplant into a mech more suited for STD-ridden engines. Er, standard engines. Yeah.

(Girlfriend thought it would be funny.)

Sell if you need the money, otherwise, you never know when you'll need or want it.

On these I prefer a large standard engine, such as 280 to 310. This is because the side torsos are 1) very non-friendly to XL engines (large, easy to hit side torsos), and 2) it has large and easy to hit side torsos (which is in fact a very, very good thing if you want a mech that can take LOTS of abuse; there's a significant damage reduction to hits that impact against a destroyed side torso when it transfers to the next body part. Somewhere in the 45 to 55% [it changed fairly recently], so that hit from an AC/20 might actually just deal 10 damage. Even better if it has LARGE remnant arm hitboxes + side torso hitboxes, that AC/20 round that might have hit the residual metal of your shoulder actuator might only have done 5 damage once it reaches your center torso instead of 20.)
Food for thought.
My stalker for example after taking enough abuse to kill two Atlases by removing limbs [or straight up annihilate an Atlas piece by piece if you could destroy all 614 AP and almost all 306 HP].

But I wouldn't sell an engine.
You never know when or why you may want that engine. If money is tight... Just Play More. Earn more C-bills.
You only get, perhaps 10% of its value if you sell. Not worth it. You don't have inventory limitations, so hold onto everything. I haven't ever even sold any of the single heat sinks I have. I own about 150 mechs.. so I have hundreds or thousands of single heat sinks. No need t sell..
I sold my first engine, from a Cataphract 4x. I never sold another. I think I know have like 20 STD300 ...

Selling an XL engine on the other hand is a major decision, I would advise against it unless you are certain you will never need it, you only get about half price back when you sell an engine, and with XL engines costing 3-6 million that is not something you want to sell then buy back, at full price, later.

You have a point there, though i would keep one engine just in case...you never know if you might need it one day

There is a toggle to go from standard to XL which could make it seem like you're upgrading the engine rather than buying an XL and replacing the standard thats on board.

You get 50% of the cost of an engine. And when I got the Resistance package, I immediately sold all three of my 140STD that my Panthers had, with no regrets. WTF do I want a 140STD for? I don't even like fitting anything smaller than a 250 since I'll have to add HSs to get to 10 anyway.

anything bigger it isn't worth it IMO unless you end up with a bunch. I sold a few STD260's cause i had many, but typically i just save um. Other things you can sell, are standard heat sinks, and even weapons, if you end up with more than 5.. Medium lasers is another one you tend to rack up tons of. Non-artemis SRM and LRM's can be sold as well, like SRM6's, or LRM 15's or 20's.. very rarely will you use either with out. A few of my lights i run non Artemis launchers, so keep a couple just in case.. But my rule for most weapon systems is keep 5.. (that is if all your mechs have full weapon loadouts.
XL's never sell IMO.. I sold a XL-210 way back.. i then got into commando's and had to rebuy the dang thing!

You just never know when a crazy idea will hit you, and you "just want to try this". If you have a few of each engine range on hand, you can pop something weird together for free and see if you like it or not.
I would never sell them for the money, because you're getting stone cold ripped off on the resale value. I'd only sell them if I had a boatload of them, and I knew I'd never need that many.

I go by the Rule of Threes. Generally speaking you will need 3 mechs to level up a new chassis. So keep enough of everything to equip three mechs similarly. It doesn't happen often, but with larger mechs you often carry multiple weapon systems or can jam in a couple of medium lasers or shave 8 pts of armor off the legs and cram in a couple of MGs for fun.
