My point is not that it won't bring some attention and lots of new players, I hope and believe it will.
But I don't think it will be a huge deal in terms of those players being a different kind from the current ones or in the games image, people are people everywhere. Some will complain, some will like it, some will stay, some will leave. Just like now but with more people.
The game has been out for a while and is already fairly well known within the genre, and I wouldn't overestimate the increased exposure. Games don't automatically get lots of players just from going steam, not unless paired with a good hype campaign. Hopefully PGI pulls off a good one together with a range of polish and improvements to the game, and that could function like a kind of new release, but it's not like the game is difficult to find or download now. My guess is that most people actively looking for a game like this have already found it.
If the game still plays and functions like a feature incomplete beta, it will probably be treated as such. Steam is saturated with betas already, players who like taking part in such projects might like this one as well. If the game looks more like a finished product at the time, without placeholders and a feature complete CW with fluff and macro level strategy and so on, well then we have a different situation because that opens up a whole new audience of players.
As a comparison, overgrowth went steam a while ago. It didn't change much because the game isn't finished. Releasing the complete game will be a much bigger event than just putting it on steam. Same with MWO I suspect.
