Assault usually devolves into a protracted snorefest...

and it also seems to attract the worst kind of bads and steering wheelers. Like, whole ten/twelve man teams of terribads going for a cap win against skittles. Also all the small maps are terrible on Assault.

The comment you were responding too was specifically about Assault on River City. Assault is still better than skirmish. Skirmish players complain about NASCARing and the last guy shutting down and hiding, but you generally don't see much of either in assault.

See, this is what people don't seem to get about this game. The moving, aggressive force wins. Period. Even if you form a firing line you have to be ever moving, fluid, ready to jump at the first glimpse of an advantage, and strike hard. Both mindless "Nascar" as well as stale, immobile shootouts are bad, but mostly people tend to bad play way more on Assault than on Skirmish. The small maps on Assault are simply bad. I'd take real objective based game modes over Skirmish and Assault in a heartbeat.
And btw, I just answered the "why people play Skirmish" question, which was in the post I referred to. I mean, you can't exclude maps, so you have to pick other game modes to avoid River City on Assault.

No foolin'? Unfortunately, in the solo queue people learned not to trust others to back them up, learned that being aggressive alone gets one killed, and the combined turns certain map/mode combos into a game of battlemech peek-a-boo. I'm sure you've seen this.

The problem with River City is that the ONLY game mode it's any good on is Conquest. Which I have found is the best game mode anyway. It forces people to be mobile and fight. You can't really blame ANY game mode for the way RC is. It was designed for 8v8 with bases and no defense turrets. It does not support 12v12 well, nor defense turrets. And skirmish is all-around, in my observation, the worst game mode (YMMV). (Skirmish coming into the game due to player demand makes me think of a lovely line from Springfield Mayor "Diamond" Joe Quimby in The Simpsons, "You people are a bunch of fickle much-heads.")
