I'd like to see a "canon-mech" only server(s) meaning NO player mods allowed.

No munch-tech allowed; historical units only.

As I'm not sure how the game plays yet, I do not know of what issues, if any, this may cause when it comes to modules.

Maybe even maps developed to represent classic battles featured in the CBT universe?

I like modifying my ride as much as the next mechwarrior, I just think it would be fun and challenging to use the mechs "as-is", flaws and all.

Never happen. Too many tweakers out there. We must modify. It's in our genes. Now let's see. I think I can fit another small laser on my butt.

Tweaking a mech to fit one's fighting style is a basic part of the canon.. Such a restriction leads to the question of is this canon or not - an area where there ias great disagreement.

Not entirely true, as a matter of fact. In general, tweaks to a mech to suit one's fighting style is only practically/easily possible if you are piloting an OmniMech... which the vast majory of mechs are not.

To modify a standard mech's weapons loadout, armor, engine, etc... is difficult, and prohibitively expensive. Unlike an OmniMech, which has pod space that you can load with modular equipment designed to be easily swapped out for other modules, a standard mech's equipment and load out is hard wired into the design.

I for one would love the option to play on canon only servers, and/or in canon only matches.

I would stock it up to the max.

No-Crosstech servers were what thrived in the interregnum between the initial bloom of MW4 and the recent resurgence. I wouldn't be surprised to see big queues if there was an option for stock only and/or no-crosstech matches in MWO.

yes weapon modifications are difficult with standard mechs but browse through the 3025 tro and see how many pilots have modified their rides with battle salvage... it is realistic to a degree

Maybe on certain Solaris VII matches but not on standard drops. Why would there be an artificial restriction when attacking one planet but not another?

You do realize that complete customization is in the "canon".

Complete customisation for almost the cost of a new mech in a process taking months is the canon. Swapping your AC/10 for a Gauss between missions is not for a standard BattleMech. Customisation in canon is also something rarely done by elite units who'll do it once to customise a mech to their tastes or major governments developing a new variant, not every other day by every Tom, Dick and Kurita.

I agree. I think their should be a 'classic' game mode. Not mandatory, but an option.

I would certainly play everyonce and a while.

Though, I must stress this - It should be an OPTIONAL game mode, that one must op in for.

I agree fully with this.

For two reasons:

1. Customized 'mech won't be designed for balance, but for wining. I expect stock 'mechs to be designed with balance in mind. Why not allow player that wish to, to play in games with pre-balanced 'mechs only. (E.g. Are player customized 'mech allowed in BT if both player don't agree?)

Some players may not wan't to spend hours in the 'mechlab just to stay competative. Let them have their on games. Isn't better to let these players play among themselves instead of having them cry "nerf!" every time they lose to a customized 'mech. If customization isn't a problem to the them then they have no reason to interfere with it.

Now you might argue the stock 'mech will be balanced with customized 'mechs, I think the customized 'mechs will have an edge. The components might be balance and we might be limited by hard points etc. but a well designed 'mech is more effective than the sum of it's parts , and I think the players will turn out to be the better 'mech designers.

2. Isn't it just sound design philosophy to have a contingency plan ready in case serious balancing or unforeseen gamplay issues arise as a result of customization (have customized 'mechs been balanced in the past MWs?). That way players can migrate to the "stock only" mode instead of migrating to other games...

I have not problem imagining these forums being full of posts declaring "Customization is broken", "X/Y combo is OP" etc. etc.

If you look at cannon, say the old 3025 TRO, yes there are instance of mechs being customized. The customizations are usually "unique" individuals who are part of some story or storyline in the BT universe. Many of these custom mechs originated on Solaris or due to necessity, not because the pilot wanted an uber-mech.

The other instances of customizations that are mentioned are a unit of mechs being customized for a specific mission to give them an advantage in that scenario. Mechs from the 3025 forward are designed to work in concert with other mechs. A Hunchback 4-G has a specific role, and can easily be outgunned by a faster mech with longer range. I've seen it happen on tabletop as well as in lan party.
However team that hunchback with another, longer ranged mech, and you have a nice team that works together nicely.

I understand, everyone has a "ME ME ME" attitude and they can easily make better mechs, but they are only thinking of the mech they field. They are not actual designers looking at how the pilots of their mechs are going to fare on a total battlefield. I'm sure I'm gonna lose many matches because I'm not a munchkin, but those matches that I, as part of a team, win It will all the sweeter knowing I did it without having to be a munchkin

The "option" that many are requesting would be this: You have the option to play or NOT to play on a server that allows only canon designs.

It would be known that this/these servers are Canon Mechs only prior to anyone joining the server/match and your customized rides wouldn't be available (greyed-out?) for use. No Munchback available, only those variants provided by MWO. Again, not knowing anything about in-game play or mechlab, I would think you'd always have your stock model of a given mech available, and any mods after that would have to be saved under a new designation/name?

Hell, with all the canon Hunch/Sway-back variants, you could field a very interesting company! That is of course, if the variants have been put in the game.

Also, I do not know how modules work either, but I'm not sure I'd restrict those...allowing for a little bit of customization, unless that requires a bit too much programing or unecessarily complicates things. Stock with no modules would be acceptable as well.

For now the game is focused on PVP.
What RP are you talking about?
May be later after game launch.
