I'm thinking of getting a Boar's Head for my hero mech, and the above is what I was looking at. Stock weaponry, added AMS and maxxed the armor, moved ammo into legs, and changed out the engine to a 340 STD. Use the LRM10 & AC10 on approach (and for assist XP) then lean heavily on the MPLs once I'm up close.

Fast with STD engine, quirks used at its best for MPLs and best ballistic to run on its own.

This is my build. During the hero mech event not too long ago where the Boar's Head was one of the tournament mechs, I was as high as 8th place and ended at 21st place. It's fairly balanced and is pretty good for punching holes in enemies.

No heat issues, wrecks in pug play.

6 MPL, AC20, LRM10, 350ish STD engine. AC20 3 tons ammo LRM 10 2 tons. AMS think I squeaked it in too as big as atlas is anything removing incoming missiles is worth it.
Brutal up close and LRM10 could go with SRM6 (same cooldown as AC20 so they tie together real well) but I find the extra range of LRM10 to be to handy, especially on this close in mech. To many times some fast little schmuck zipping all over staying at range met its end with the LRM10.
Atlas is a mighty big target so tends to get pounded, Boar drove me nuts for awhile too but once got skills up and settled into build I liked things started to click. Torso Twist is real important need to spread that damage out everyone fears that right torso and what ever big cannon is there. So when on cooldown twist like your dancing.

Edit; put the dhs on left side only, ammo right side or whereever you feel, just not left side.

Yeah, if you're not good at torso twisting, positioning, and watching your minimap.
I run the stock XL400 on mine and as mentioned above it was good enough to put me in the top 25 during their hero mech event. I still take it out sometimes when I'm feeling frisky and don't have any trouble posting a 600+ dmg match. Somehow I only have a 2.02 KD with it, but I did keep it bone stock from release day right up until that event, so that's probably why.
(to get into 21st for that event, I had to post consistent 850+ dmg rounds with multiple kills in winning matches, so it can't be that bad of a mech with the right pilot)

These things don't save you from another pilot who can do the same with an accurate shot. All those skills become doubly effective when you use a STD engine too, rather than just basic necessities to survive more than 5 seconds with an XL in an Atlas.
That competition was solo Q right? That would certainly lessen the vulnerability of it I suppose.
If you like it, hats off to you, but any time I see an atlas with an XL I either cringe cause its on my team or pick up an easy kill.

I have STD engines in all my other Atlas' but in the Boars Head I removed the big torso ballistic. This shrinks the RT making XL "easier" to manage. The unnatural speed (for an atlas) makes this variant a Hero for me.

Somewhat future-proofed laservomiter with max engine, Command Console, BAP and ideally a Target Info Gathering module to help counter what they intend for lasers in the PTR. 51 laser alpha and 39% heat efficiency. Just slap on a 9x9 Coolshot and you should be a happy camper.

BOAR'S HEAD
Here's something more long-range. Can't have fun if you keep losing. Has the standard 3 LL + Gauss for meta and an extra 3 ML for close-range punch and still 400XL.

BOAR'S HEAD
These days I'm trying an all-energy build, with ridiculous heat sinks:
