So I need to wipe my computer as it is having some issues and I was wondering if it is possible to back up the game to an external hard drive to save having to download it again. Thanks.

I don't see why it wouldn't be. All it is is just the client/launcher. All the mech data and everything else is stored in PGI's servers as far as I know.

Sure. Should work fine, though I'd recommend running the repair tool before and after just in case you forgot to move a file back.

In your program files, just back up the "Piranha Games" folder. Then, when you wipe your computer, just put that folder back in Program Files. Should work fine.

Yep I have done it a bunch of times! I can't remember if you install it first, then before you launch the client, copy your backup into the installed folder. Then when you run the patcher it sees your game as it was when the last backup was done

I tried to do such backup, but the installer detects a corrupted installation and deletes the whole folder, there should be a utility, it is now 9GB to download again.

Don't forget to back up your "My Saved Games" folder as well. Otherwise you're gonna have to reset all of your controls, graphic settings, and possibly even be required to go through the tutorial.

Sure, that's not a problem.
If you're using the Steam MWO client you'll have to start downloading it via Steam and pause the download, then copy MWO back to it's install location and continue the download to avoid having to download the whole thing again. Steam will then verify that the files are there and only replace outdated files and add any new ones.
This also works for switching to the Steam MWO client.

I usually just reinstall it. Ensures I have a new/clean version with no leftovers from the previous OS.

I tried this recently and unfortunately it didn't work. The launcher couldn't run and i had to download it all again.

None of the Mechs have rearview mirrors, so I doubt that the game itself will be able to back up well either.
