Yes it's tanky indeed if you max out survival.
I loved the commando before resizing and quirk changes (just because of it's speed), was kinda dissappointed when it got bigger and less quirked, but now with skill tree i am in love again.

Haven't used one with a commando, but i got hit by one once if i remember correctly.
