LOL French? Even though I am American I know some of Canada's history, of course it helps my Grand Mother was Canadian (living in the birthplace of the US Navy doesn't hurt either). When America tried to liberate Canada from Britain (war of 1812), America failed, as the Canadians did not want to be liberated.
Also I am not surprised. From my experience, for the most part Canadians are a polite bunch, modesty can be a good thing.

I don't think we tried to liberate Canada. I think we were just fighting the Brits who happened to be squatting in Canada at the time.

That is essentially what we are taught in history class. However, our history books are pretty heavily distorted to take a pro-American view of what that war was really about and how it really played out. The only reason we Americans didn't get our butts completely handed to us in that war was because the British were just a little preoccupied at the time with this guy named Napoleon.

Umm.... we did get our butts kicked in the war of 1812. The only reason we have half of the artwork still hanging in the White House is due to Dolly Madison running into the burning building to save them.
As for the reason the war started; there was one issue that fueled the call for war. Long story short, the British had a policy of stopping American shipping and forcing the crews to serve in their Navy.

What can I say? Budget cuts.
