So, people don't want an actual chance to be on the board, they just want free stuff? Cause only founders had a chance to be on the board......

Well, 4 times 50 players could be on the board, and there more than 750 founders playing (I only played one mediocre round on my Jenner and ended up in place 769 which means that anyone with only one round and a terrible game was below that number), so the majority of those players got nothing at all from the leaderboard part of the challenge.

I'm honestly trying to come up with some way to use either mech that I can't do with another variant. So far, I got nothing.

Quarantine
Fast standard engine brawler: QUARANTINE

Slower standard enging brawler: QUARANTINE

XL top speed brawler: QUARANTINE

Honestly, if you want jumpjets the 7K is better. If you want firepower, the 6K. The Quarntine is more agile than the 7K and better armored so maybe it has an edge there. But the 6K wins for agility, top speed, firepower and weapon quirks hands down. The 6K and 7K have better hardpoint locations too.
If they took out the hand and lower arm actuators so you could put an AC20 in the arm then it would be a nice alternate to the YLW and maybe worth taking.

Top Dog
With the quirks, the Top Dog's role is as a brawler. That's a huge amount of armor and structure to chew through.
Super hot standard engine brawler: TOP DOG
This one has a little bit of range with the LPL but you'll kill yourself if you fire 2 alphas in a row. Dropping the LPL for an ERLL and 2 heatsinks at least lets you fire the ERLL until you reach brawling range. And you can at least survive shooting 2 alphas.
Or, you can drop the LPL for a ML, 3 heatsinks and maxing the engine to 315. You have to drop half a ton of armor to get it all in.

But honestly, the 5S and 5SS have better brawling quirks for ML and MPL, respectively, with slightly less survivability and agility. And the 9SE with LPL would probably kill the Top Dog before he got into MPL range.

Actually, everyone could participate and win something in the founder challenge (Founders just got an extra bonus with each level).

Spoiler

This one however really is only for 2 Mechs in the whole game and no one else gets anything, so he actually does have a point.

There is a slight difference in an event made as gratitude to founders where everybody else still can join. Or an event trying to sell more mechs by making it exclusively for those mechowners imho.

I've been playing around with the quarantine loadouts, using an AC10 with a ML/SPL a long with two SRM 6s, not to bad but I never felt comfortable with it and I got the feeling I wasn't making the most of all the mech due to not being able to use two of the energy hard points. Just swapped to three medium pulse lasers, 2 srm 4s and a ac 5, did quite well in the only game I've played with it, think the general damage will be higher in the long run, need to watch out for heat though and control the firing.

3 pages of comments and no one has wondered yet why it is called "Top Dog" when it should be "Tallman"? That is a canonic custom variant, i cannot see why they needed to change its name

I asked it on the announcement page. The reason was they don't name them after the pilots, but some sort of reference to them, such as the Protector is based on Kerensky's Orion.

The Pilot was Tallman. It should be called that, but PGI actually never called the hero mechs by their pilots' names. The Protector should be Kerensky for example.

Yeah ... no.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we got Thunderbolt and Wolverine heroes. They're nothing special, but they're not as bad as some of the heroes we've gotten.

The Tallman (I'm never calling it 'Top Dog' ... sorry) is a canon variant, which is good, but it's got an ugly paint job, which is bad. That means I won't be paying full price for this hero. Maybe when it goes on 50% off sale.

The Wolverine (Why is the Tallman the TDR-5S-T but the Wolverine is the WVR-Q? Shouldn't it be a WVR-6Q? Or 6-Q?) isn't a hero that has a real reason to exist. It doesn't do anything that the other Wolverines don't do. And the paint job might look OK recolored, but stock it does not make me say 'I Must Go Buy That!'. So it's another one that I might get for 50% off ... if I've already gotten everything else I want.

So, throwing a leaderboard event for a couple of underwhelming heroes doesn't move me. I suppose there's no harm in it, but spending 50% more to get the 'mechs now so I can earn 20% more C-Bills does not appeal. It's a nice bonus if I was already going to spend full price and get the 'mechs right now, but for your average whale, there's just not much motivation to spend here.

Anyone else notice that the event has started....but there are no entries on the leader board. Think that's the first time I've ever seen that happen...or not happen.

I'm actually tempted. Super easy to win 2 other mechs...although I already have a Thunderbolt champion that I won in the past. Plus I don't want to be like the only guy on the board...would be kinda embarrassing.

And if a bunch of people suddenly join, I'll be committing myself to an all weekend go at it...assuming that some of them will be the high elo types. And I'm still not sure that I trust the leader boards. Some of the past top scores have been insane.

On the other hand, it'll be a nice weekend off from grinding if I don't buy into this. And I have only purchased heroes when they were on sale in the past.

Wow...two events in a row that I skipped.

Wait...I take it back....there are now people on the board.

Not even going to consider it by a long shot.

HSR seems a lot worse on lasers and these are mostly energy mechs (well the Thunderbolt in its entirety...

I don't get why everyone is complaining and moaning at this event. Its not like you have to participate, its just a nice little thing for the players who purchased these heroes at release. Not to mention since these heroes weren't out at the time of the hero weekend events. Now that these mechs are out players who own these mechs can compete on a leaderboard like every other hero mech could. Its not like their even baiting people to go out of their way to buy these mechs to compete for this event. The rewards aren't much incentive to do that (maybe if your in the top five the champion is a nice reward). The whole event and sale is just a nice gesture, not a cash grab.

First off it is not just a nice gesture. Its a sale. Sales are designed to sell things and make a profit. Perhaps Canadia is a magical land devoid of true Capitalists, but market research might go a long way in determining which mechs will/wont make money. I even happen to like both mech varriants, but add to the equation a quirk list that is worse than every other chasis in an attempt not to incite the p2w cries and you get a rather lame rollout for another couple of hero mechs. Considering PGI will probably try to sell a hero varriant of every single mech they make, it gets a little hard to get excited about spending money on a mech that wont even be as good as the ones I can buy for free... Just sounds like another poorly planned sale... Wonder where anyone could have gotten that idea? I even like a lot of the events/sale things they've done recently, but it feels like we've been dazzled by some fancy PR firm over the last few months and now we're being handed back over to the same old bs mech sales department thats been cranking out the mechs, but couldn't fix the game to save their lives... Perhaps putting sales on the back burner for a few months and focusing on fixing the game would go a long way to expanding the player base, but what do I know.

Question about the tournament, if you're in the top 5 do you get all the rewards or just the highest reward?

I am absolutely blown away there are 75+ people that actually bought either of those hero mechs. I got the money but just cannot purchase an inferior product of something I already own that was free. Though I guess I should applaud the loyalty to those buying these mechs.

This will probably be a flop; I don't see many people picking these Mechs up right after the release of MASC Mechs and the pre-order availability of IIC Mechs.

Besides...an all-energy TDR? It's not exactly like we have two others laying around somewhere... :(

I was really hoping for something with ballistics and ballistic quirks instead.

Totally agreed. Im mean, THUNDER (ballistics), BOLT (PPC etc). Its totally legal PGI, to add varity. Follow the lore as much as possible, but c'mon... I hoped kinda for an dual AC 10 or AC 20 option for this... Top Dog.

I dunno, it's weird. Maybe it's because it's the event for just cash mech but whenever I see a Quarantine (why the hell is that the name) or a Top Dog (don't like that either), I want to kill them dead. It seems that it's more annoying to me than a Gold mech or even a lurming assault (I need to try that some day). I know it's not the players fault and hey free stuff is free stuff when you are playing and leveling up anyways. But it grinds my gears... Also, weather nowadays is making me cranky. I hate the humidity.
