Community Warfare is in dire need of a mechanic that ties the in-game battles on every planet to the bigger picture that is the Inner Sphere map so that units can have a reason to be invested in a single faction and at the same time, promote smaller, more active units without putting hard caps on units decisions.

I propose an economic system that adds cbills to unit coffers every ceasefire for holding planets within your current faction. The number of cbills obtained increases linearly for each planet you own and decreases linearly for every pilot within your unit.

-This means that as your unit captures more planets, you gain more money.

-This also means that larger units "cost" more to maintain, so being a huge unit means you need more planets to get the same number of cbills as a smaller unit with less planets. You can not lose cbills per day for simply having a large unit with no planets.

-This also means it would be more beneficial to stick with a single faction (once you own some planets) since you can only gain cbills from planets that are in the current faction you are aligned with.

Some questions that may come up:

What would these cbills be for?

- Anything PGI can think of that would make the game more compelling to play. Ideas include:
  • Unit leaders can give the cbills to pilots in the unit (or themselves)
  • Unit leaders can use them to "hire" other units to change contracts
  • Unit leaders can use them to "buy" sectors on a planet ("buying" a sector could be exponentially more expensive the more sectors your faction already controls, can only be done during the first half of the attack phase, does not count towards victories for your unit on the planet and can not progress planet capture past halfway.)
  • Unit leaders can use them to buy "unit mechs" that can be shared by the unit, but cost a fee every time they are used.
  • Unit leaders can buy a loyalty point increase for all pilots for a limited amount of time
  • Unit leaders can give cbills to other units freely (can be used for role-playing or MWO politics.)
-What about units that want to be Mercenaries?
  • Mercenaries are a class of their own.
  • They are factionless.
  • They must choose between Clan and IS (even though clans didn't have mercs)
  • They are the only units that can be "hired" by loyalist units.
  • They can fight or defend wherever they want within their chosen side (Clan or IS).
  • they gain bonus cbills after winning a match that varies depending on what faction they were helping at the time (similar to how factions gain bonuses now).
  • They can not gain any cbills for "owning" a planet (this is reserved for Loyalists)
  • They can not gain loyalty points but can lose loyalty points if they kill a mech of a certain faction.
-Why only cbills as a reward?
  • Cbills seem like a simple way to implement different options using unit coffers and is also a simple way to balance between Loyalists and Mercenaries.
-compare and contrast Mercenaries from Loyalists in this system.
  • Loyalists do not gain a cbill bonus per match they win like Mercenaries do.
  • Loyalists gain cbills from owning planets within their faction every ceasefire while Mercenaries do not.
  • Loyalists can use unit coffer abilities while Mercenaries can not.
  • Loyalists can not attack and defend where ever they want like Mercenaries can. Loyalists can only attack planets in their own faction's attack lanes, and can only defend their factions planets and planets attacked on the clan front by the opposing (IS or Clan) side.

-What is stopping pilots from leaving and joining units before ceasefire to "trick" the A.I. into give a unit more cbills?
  • Whenever a pilot joins or leaves a unit, the number of "members" in the unit does not change for 24 hours. The new recruits can play as if they are in the unit, but their wins do not count towards capturing a planet. After the 24 hours is up, the roster is updated and any new pilots on the unit roster now gain points for their unit normally.

I had fun coming up with this proposal. I hope someone posts some constructive criticism or additions to this idea. happy hunting Mechwarriors.
