Always name them after what they're good at, eg.
Raven 3L w/ Narc - ComStar (cause, you know, it controls information flow ;) )
CDA-2B - Wubninja
Etc.

Always name mine with the primary weapon(Lpl, Lrm, Ml, ect. ), helps me sort my dropdeck. The one mech that has a real name is one of my Hellbringers "Lance Killer " because I often get exactly 4 kills with it.

I've only named 2 mechs, but they're themed. My DRG-5N is named 'Fury' after the tank from the movie of the same name, and my DRG-1N is named 'Warpig' after the tank in COD4. If anyone knows more named tanks from pop culture let me know, because I have a couple more Dragons I'd like to name as well.

I used too, back when I only had a few mechs. Stopped doing it for every mech some time after Phoenix mechs.

Old Examples:

Jenner F - Teapot
Spider - Annoyance
Awesome 9M - Honey Badger (Fast Brawler - "back in the day" he was my go to "don't care" wrecking ball)
Raven 3L - Chicken Liitle
Atlas DDC - Red Skull (PC Gamer with Black / Red Color Scheme)
Victors - Knight / Paladin / Seeker

Then there were more typical names:

Catapault A1 - Splat Cat / Streat Cat
King Crab - Ultra Crab
Timberwolf - Wub Wub Wolf / Vomit Wolf
Thunderbolt - Thunderwub

All of my mechs are named after their current loadout - because I change loadouts regularly as well as change between a lot of different mechs - so I need a quick way to see what is on any given mech.

I tend to theme by chassis and Mechs have to make an impression on me before they get named.

My Spiders are named for Princesses of Barsoom
5D - Dejah Thoris
5V - Tavia
(My wolfhounds will likely extend this tradition with Tara, Thuvia, and Valla Dia.)

My Ravens are named after animals
Huginn - Salamander
3L - Viper
2X - Venom

Locusts get ww2 fighter names
1V - Miss Pick Up
PB - Cheap Date

My heros/champions are named like transformers (My fav name so far is my Founders Jenner 'Crumplezone'), the rest are named randomly from things I find in old D&D monster manuals.

I try to keep to 3 syllables and include a ~ if i have modules for a mech.\
Need an extra 4 or so characters added to the limit.

I name my mechs in groups of three of the same theme... for instance.. My Timberwolves were Judge, Jury and Executioner. I have since changed them to "Fankenmech, Frankewolf and Frankenboat".

My Hellbringers are Mephisto, Diablo, and I'm still farming C-bills to buy "Bane"

My Mist Lynx is "Little Fang", and the other two will probably be something the lines of "Shaktooth" and "Catscratch"

The rest of my mechs are not themed by group of 3, but by build.. so my wub stormcrow is "The Surgeon", and my Nova is "Star burst"

Yeah, I get creative... :P
