Welcome to the Internet friend.

PS: Please don't leave MechWarrior, you're awesome. I could care less about the forum whiners but YOU! WILL STILL NEED YOU!

To answer your question more seriously...

As for how people on these forums treat you...

Everyone is biased towards their own opinion and its natural for people to defend their own preferred faction to a fault. Its like how two people of differing political views start a debate and never get anywhere with it. Both feel so passionately about their points that they refuse to believe anything the other person says.

Not only that, but it seems to me for some reason that BattleTech is full of a lot of angry diehards. :) Those kinds of people need to chillax and have a beer or something (not that I drink). People like them may be one of the reasons why BattleTech hasn't become more popular with the younger crowd. (NOBODY at my High School had any idea what BattleTech/Mechwarrior was. When I showed them they thought it was Transformers.)

As for the factions having flaws which you mentioned in another post - there is no "perfect" faction, either in BattleTech or real life. Morally perfect factions are impossible because moral perfection is impossible. Every faction has skeletons in the closet, just like real life - even we loud and proud Americans have done terrible things. If you don't like the factions, be a lone wolf, or better yet, start your own non-canon faction.

Anyway, I hope I'll see you around...

Mechwarrior isn't as open to creating your own faction (unless it is a Merc corp) as most universes are.

We honestly aren't trying to make fun of you or chase you away.

You are more than allowed to have your own opinion, but some of them have started to intrude into the (here I stumble for words yet again) lore of the series?
(IE the Blood Scorpions - the 20/17 clans are a very precise part of the lore, it would be sort of like trying to add a third faction to the Jedi/Sith conflict)

Again, we really aren't trying to chase you away.

IMHO... I don't think "opinions" are under fire so much the way they are issued. It's rather comical how it's not enough state an opinion without someone sensationalizing it to the point of becoming hyperbole...

It's frustrating really, as I've seen a lot of good posts with salient points being made that get lost in the the ensuing dust-up that follows...

I think that we are what keeps the BattleTech fire burning. .We love our favourite factions, the characters, the battles and even politics. The downside of this passion for the BT universe is that anyone trying to add something not present in it or doing something against the lore might get a not too good reaction.

And it is not true that BT is not popular. I am 17 and when i discovered MWO my memories of MW2 came back and i started getting really into BT.

Well, what I meant was the MechWarrior title has kinda-sorta been washed over by games like Call of Duty and Halo. (Not saying I hate those games, I LOVE those games, but they really do hog the spotlight.) Obviously there are still lots of loyal fans but I'd like to see BattleTech as well-known and popular as Star Wars one day.

Well here's the thing about opinions, yours are right, but so are everyone's, which basically means everyone is wrong, because every opinion out there will have a counterpoint.

The problem you are having is actually caring about other people's opinion of your opinion in the first place. If you recognize that no one cares about your opinion on the matter and you don't care about anyone else opinion, everyone is happy because no one really gives a crap about anything.

See, simple.

I am not sure if it will be a good thing. I trust 1 BT fan is worth 5 CoD noobs and crying babies :)

However, there is a way to make BT more popular: we need a movie!!

Battletech is perfect for movies: you have very different settings and eras and great characters, alredy written.
You can do whatever you want with the stories already here!

"MechWarrior: The Exodus"? "MechWarrior: Succession Wars"? "MechWarrior: Death on Misery"? "MechWarrior: Periphery Raiders"? "MechWarrior: Operation Bulldog"? "MechWarrior: The Refusal War"? "MechWarrior: A Divided Nation"?

Choose your favourite.. Or get them all!

Hmm, sex scenes in a MW action movie... -Tries brain.-

"Oh Jared! Your Autocannon is HUGE! <3"

Nope.

Try looking up This Chick or This One

The Elementals are the burly ones - Mechwarriors tend to be smaller to fit into the cockpits better

Note the "Tend to be" :)

Well, she's too old and mean to be of any interest to me anyway...

But if SHE takes an interest in ME I'll be hopping on the closest JumpShip on its way to a barely known periphery nation, where I will hide inside of my impregnable pillow fortress with Nerf guns and a "no girls allowed" sign drawn in crayon taped to the front.

(I could actually probably do that, I have a massive collection of Nerf guns. I like to mod and paint them when the mood and money comes by. :))

It's all about Mechwarrior 2: 31st Centry Combat. Open game, select Trial of Greivance. Serve justice by combat. Best game ever made besides Ocarina of Time. Would replace PGI for original Activision team that created MW2 to recreate MWO from stage 0. It got me into playing flight & space simulators seriously, learning the physics and dynamics of flight, then actually flying real planes (several years) later.

I just read on the Wikipedia article (while I was looking up the names of the original development team) that one of the reviewers likened the control complexity to flight simulators. PC Gamer rated it a 93/100. Computer Gaming World ranked it as the 54th best game of all time in 1996. I honestly never knew it was that well known. I got it for free with my first computer back in 1995 when I was 8 and have been chasing the dragon for the next best thing ever since (I'll be 27 in a handful of days).

It's because many people cannot fathom the idea that there is any way to feel other than their own.

Thought always leads to a consistent conclusion but the lack of people capable of it tends to lead to feel vs feel wars. And in topics like what faction one likes, there is nothing but feelings anyway, so there will never be common ground on which to base any kind of discussion.

If you have your own opinion people will have their opinion on your opinion. The only way to get them to not react to your opinion is to not react to their opinion on your opinion. People feel good when arguing, it makes them feel like they have something worth saying. But the impossibility of an argument when the other side doesn't respond denies this incentive.

MechWarrior 4 took the title again.

/flinches

Mechwarrior 4 was the least simulator of all the ones with "Mechwarrior" in the title (saving Mechassault the embarrassment) it scored that title because there were just that few sims around anymore.
(rather like how Halo took the title for best FPS of the year - how many FPS came out that year?)

Why do factions think they're each right?

It is because you wouldn't be a member of that faction if you didn't think it was best. Duh :)
