I don't really know how PGI does it; different studios do things differently.

I do remember that when there was a year that no new maps came out, word was that it was partly due to them having to get all the clan wave one mechs worked on.

I think that period was also when PGI and IGP had the most internal conflict, and there was a lot of upheaval and discord internally (the whole Clan release debacle was IGP marketing department's idea, IIRC).

The reason why development on MWO kind of petered out during that time is because of a game called "Transverse." There was also the MechWarrior: Tactics development that was sub-contracted out to another company that... never had the contract renewed after 2013 after the founders' packages were received....

Ooops.

IGP is gone.

https://en.wikipedia...Game_Publishing Filed for bankruptcy in October of last year, the month after licensing was ceded to PGI.

For more fun and games, you can look up Jarhead Games, Groove, and Rabbit Hole Interactive.

Pack-o-mania has always been the #1 source of income. You don't need to look for conspiracy theories - the truth is right there: Packs = #1 for monies, everything else #2 or lower.

I would dearly love a monetization run over a couple of patch cycles before steam release. Let me pimp my ride! I'll throw money at you, PGI. Decals, extra paint, paint effects (chrome, matte, rusted, anodized), unique geometry, different colour cockpit glass, mech themes, hangar themes...

Cosmetics are the way to go.

Well... have they considered HATS? After all... TF2 did damn well with just that. Um... perhaps P2W weapons like some FPS games do... or what about KEYS to open mystery boxes? Call them LOST TECH CACHES! JUST BUY ONE COMSTAR KEY!

Have they considered MICRO-transactions instead of "Here's my paycheck" transactions?

I think they're MAD not to have - but the issue will be the ambiguity of it all. Packs... well, packs sell. They have a well established and effective infrastructure built around them. The team will be well practiced in churning out new mechs.

Other systems though... PGI would know that cosmetic-o-rama will be popular, but how popular? When will they see a return on diverting and investing resources into new systems? Ambiguous!

THEY SHOULD DO IT THOUGH. I would micro transact the **** out of unique geometry, more paint, decals... I want my mechs to look like my mechs. Retina searing hot pink, incredibly reflective chrome, an Atlas with a Jason hockey mask... OR YES, HATS. AN ATLAS WITH A TOP HAT. TAKE MY GODDAMN MONEY.

Think you misunderstand. The first three packs took a year and a half to announce. Look how frequently they are announced now and the emphasis put on pre-orders. No conspiracy theory, PGI is in the midst of a cash grab.

Currently PGI tries to make skins and then skin them to all mechs. What do you think of mech specific skins? Easier to develop for sure.

Personally I am not much on buying cosmetics. I've bought a few but I would not care if my ground crews painted my mechs with the cheapest rattle cans of paint on sale at Wallyworld. If I could get a decal of a hand flipping a bird on my front torso and one that said 'F' you on the back I would probably get that. Since I do not have to look at my mechs I really don't care what paint jobs they have.

I could dig on some warhorns though. A Woody Woodpecker laugh one I'd buy or a Peter Griffin fart one. But if the Peter Griffin fart one on had one fart I would not buy it, it would have to cycle through his many farts to get my cash.

Modules or engines I do see being a source of income for PGI. Most of them cost more than a lot of mechs.

I do understand - you seem to be insinuating that there's something underhand going on with the pack releases - that the devs are putting these out hoping we won't pay attention to the frequency. The thing is, the devs know we know. Russ said in the townhall that it's the best way for them to make money, and that they are getting decent cash from them.

I'm not saying I completely agree with it, i'm saying I understand it. PGI aren't trying to hide the fact that they are grabbing cash. If it works, and works well, then all the more power to them. It's as trite a saying as a lot of the 'island' comments going round here, but businesses have to make money somehow, and this is PGI's #1 way.

I would dearly love focus on monetization for a few patch cycles though. Proper micro transactions. Unique geometry, cosmetics, that kind of stuff.

I believe that the playerbase is just too small right now to focus on cosmetics and they chose to not go the random box route (which is fine, people tend to hate that).

If they do Steam well and we get a lot of people, and it's possible if they do it right cause god knows I'm pissed that I can't even farm in peace in Tera anymore since they released on Steam due to the high number of people 24/7. I used to have no competition due to me being in SEA timezone but not the case anymore. The Steam release really buffed up Tera's deadtime population to rival the old primetime population and if they can do that for MWO then CW won't be a problem for anyone.

Lots of people means more of the lesser items get picked up and more packs sold meaning they can be more comfortable financially and focus on the lower end of things to boost their revenue.

I would buy camo if it wasn't so locked and overpriced.

Seriously, my clan wave 1 mechs NEVER got to choose faction content (it only existed on wave 2 and onwards) so my clan wave 1 mechs have NO camo

It costs like a gazillion MC per chassis, per color. It's 48,000MC for 8 chassis with 4 schemes, that are similar to wave 2 you got for free.

Or they have just run out of things to monetize?

Truly the last two heroes were rushed out. Hero mech releases used to be regular and legit. But they didn't bring enough $$$ fast enough. So then pack-o-mania started and now we have packs going out to Q4FY15.

So what is left to monetize? Maybe the Flea ala Urbanmech? Clan Heroes? Realistically the next pack can't be for another couple months so what would you spend $$$ on in the meantime?

lol mwo = life support in some type of language, i think there is 36 people online tonight

What is Stean? This tread makes no sense?

I agree that the last two heros are very weak. The lack of any kind of solid weapons quirks put them well below other variants...

player submitted decals is stilla thing left to monetarize, so many mechs want symbols getting slapped on.

I bet there are at least 12 IIC / Second Line Mechs coming out in the next ... uhm years and people WILL buy that stuff like crazy.
Origins are just the first (*cough* lowest *cough*) wave.
I have no doubt there will be Mechs like Kodiak, Stone Rhino, Wolfhound IIC (Hero?). Maybe even Marauder IIC because it can skirt legal stuff or whatever.

doesnt matter if hardcore fans here do not want paint, because "they dont need that crap". In general, people playing games, want to have something "special" something that others dont have. You think they will be satisfied with same basic color mech ? nope. The want UNIQUES. (ye not like D3).
