The winner would get a sizable amount of C-bills and Loyalty points.
Occasionally, the last mech would destroy himself by overheating or falling and destroying their legs, but it would be very rare for that to happen.
If we had some competition during a ghost drop, people would look forward to them.

>You drop on a planet
>Defenders aren't there
>Instead of taking it logically and securing it, you angrily shoot your team-mates, getting yourself killed, and killing those who would have your back in a real battle
I'm all for brawling it out with team-mates, but that's in a private match for training. In a ghost drop, it'd be really silly. No thanks.
Admittedly, they do need to fix ghost drops, but this isn't the way to do it. Perhaps PVE will fix this.

Clan mates duel all the time to prove their skill.
This wouldn't be much different.
It wouldn't be much different from what we already do during a ghost drop. Except without the team kill penalty.

But this is exactly what clanners do. Have you never bickered with a fellow Falcon until one of you felt forced to challenge the other to a Circle of Equals? Happens all the time.

Do you know anything about the Clans? I mean, other than they use cool toys?
You gain honor when you destroy enemies of your Clan (the stronger the enemy, the more honor to you), not in capturing empty and defenseless base and destroying valuable OmniMechs belonging to your Clan.
Seriously, read something about the Clans. The Clanners hate wasting resources. Any idiot attacking his own starmates and wasting twelve frontline OmniMechs* in the fight over empty base would be instantly challenged by his own Cluster commander and killed in Circle of Equals (probably).
* And those Omnis had to be transported from the Clan Homeworlds, by the way.

Why do I think this is important? It rewards the group who has the initiative and adds some real tactical benefit to ghost-drops. A heavily defended planet can be made even more difficult to take by an inferior attacking force and a planet under heavy attack could be even harder to defend by a much smaller force. To me, this has a real-world analog in deploying forces in battle where there is NEVER instant mobility -- something that the game does a poor job of modeling.

You mean read something like, say, the Jade Phoenix trilogy, where Aidan is constantly getting into duels because other clanners are insulting him all the time because they think he's a freebirth?
Whereupon taking charge of the Falcon Guards, one of the very first problems he has to deal with is one clanner wanting to duel another over something stupid?
Where said clanner has lost so many 'mechs in duels previously that she disables the ejection system on her 'mech in case another one blows up beneath her? And she goes out and both 'mechs get trashed and she dies, depriving the Guard of two 'mechs and one otherwise capable mechwarrior?
And how Aidan Pryde just sighs and carries on, because this is normal clan behavior?
Or was there something else about the clans I should have read, besides the official novels?

And in how many official novels you have read descriptions of Clanners in one Binary or Trinary attacking each other mid-mission and wasting 10-15 frontline Omnis? For "the honor of standing in empty enemy base"?

After waiting 10-15 minutes for no enemy to show there is no reason to waste more of our time, when you have 12 players ready to battle each other. We are constantly itching to duel during a ghost drop, but are afraid of the team kill penalties.
If you want, you can call it a "Training Deathmatch" session where all systems are in training mode and damage is calculated by computer. Lasers are in a low power state that does zero actual damage.
