why is their a automatic lock in this game?.

i don't waste my time locking targets nor watch the combat info on mechs to bother-sum.

yet somehow someone find it important enough for auto locking??.

If you are aiming at a target long enough it is only intelligent to have a lock.

Does one get Money for having a target lock on an enemy that gets damaged from teammates?

I thought so...

Why would you NOT lock on? It shares that enemy's location with your teammates along with health weapons and mech variant. And then they can shoot at it if they deem it a serious threat or reposition with the new information. All without speaking or chatting.

Target under reticle (Q in MW4:Mercs) and/or auto target lock on hit mech seems like legitimate requests. Should have been in there day one.

Is this a troll?

Locking targets is one of the most critical components of gameplay. If you don't lock targets, then you're not playing right!

LOL to funny.

"Hey, I suck and don't lock my targets but I get annoyed at a game mechanic that is there for people like me."

Many benefits to locking your target even while torso twisting. Multi-tasking hitting the lock target key isn't hard while engaging and even spreading damage.

At the risk of possibly responding to a troll post, but hopeful that some new player might see this and improve:

Locking targets is one of THE MOST important things you can do. It tells your team where an enemy is and what it is. It tells you what weapons an enemy is carrying (and if they have short-range stuff or things with a minimum range you can really exploit that.) and if they have any damaged areas you should be shooting for. It allows LRM mechs to help by hitting your target. The list goes on, and you should ALWAYS make a habit of locking whatever you are looking at every time. It takes about an eighth of a second to tap that "R" button, and can mean the difference between a win, a loss, a kill, or a death. Any old MWO vet will tell you this.

As above, but I would also go one step further and say that you should always lock whatever you think is the highest priority target, not necessarily what you are shooting at the time (though WHY you are not shooting the priority is a good question, unless you know your next salvo will put down whatever you are shooting at).

Because it is teamwork and should be avoided at all costs.

I just love these people that cannot be bothered to do something and want someone else to do it for them.

Troll.

There is no way someone with the 1% title is arguing for not locking.

If the OP is really not trolling then I pray they aren't on my team.

not sure what games you guys playing but in my games exposure more then 0.5 seconds is deathly.
that's barely even enough time to press R or even bothered with it.

I find that target lock is so important, i like to use target info gathering on most of my mechs. being able to take advantage of weak spots on mechs is a huge advantage. with the amount of xl engines being used, finding a side torso with no armor is a fast way to kill someone. also, if im not in position to take advantage of the info, a teammate might be, so i try to lock even when im out of weapons range of the target.

Because the enemy gets a subtle indication (light ping inside cockpit) that they have been targeted. It gives you away when you are sneaking up on someone.

Has happened to me before.

How do you ever shoot at anyone if you you are too scared to expose yourself long enough to press one button?

I wonder why we have lasers

Just have the mechs pick up rocks and chunk them

I really don't like the auto lock actually.

If I want to lock on a mech, I would. In fact, I read so fast that scanning a mech's loadout is not a burden for me, and typically I lock onto as many people as possible.
However, if I chance on this guy that is 0 ping and I want to check on enemies' info in the meanwhile, auto lock really screws with me.
What's more, it drags more of my teammates out of position than it should due to bloodlust and belief that the enemies are over here.

Plus an additional reason that PGI might understand.
edit: OK nevermind now that I read the thread, the reason in question was already stated by Yosharian (damn you Yosharian  jk).
This especially sucks since I like sneaking.
