Most definitely happened to me a couple of times. Last time I had to say "What the hell????" and then I realized the mech I just gave a dirt nap to fired streaks the same moment I killed it with large laser. We were both cored, I was just turning around (Spider) and got hit and killed by him. I swear it was about 2-3 seconds afterwards. I could not believe it at first. So yeah, it happens.

Yes. Missles, PPC's, AC's, arty, ammo explosions can do all of this.

What is much more rare is a double kill from one shot. I pulled this only once running a dual gauss ilya. One trigger pull, two targets killed. The mechs were lined up and once the game registers a mech as dead, the second projectile moves through the dead mech as it is falling and hit the guy behind him.

Wish that was an achievement, cause I'm never going to pull that off again.

cmon man, that aint necessary. Ive played games where your projectiles stop doing damage after you die, and just hit for no effect. But to the OP: yeah, it happens a lot actually. Ive even done it with lasers. IDK how that works.

I swear this happens to me. There's been many an occasion where I'm shooting at a cherry red mech just before I die, only for my SRMs / AC to magically disappear right before hitting the target. Super frustrating, but I usually run 250-300ms of ping so it's pretty much expected. (yey Australian internet!)

There's lots of ways to do it:

Ballistic weapons with travel time, air/artillery strike targeted on your own location, 2 cherry red CT mechs chest bumping, back when knockdown was in the game you could run out of bounds and tackle the other guy. You'd both pop before you could stand up and run back in bounds.

It happens occasionally.

I had an encounter a couple nights ago where I believe someone's dying autocannon shot took out my CT after I had landed the killing blow. On my screen I killed him first and died to the last shot that made it out of the barrel a fraction of a second later.

To be honest it was such a blur I couldn't tell exactly what happened other than both of us fired our last volleys and took each other out.

At least 3 or 4 times I've gotten post-death kills from an arty-drop I called while expecting to die. Truly simultaneous kills, however, are very rare.

It happens. Server lag, projectile speed...

Had it happen to me before. It was on Tourmaline, I was red all over but still at 100% killing potential (TDR-9SE wubzombie!), playing very carefully. One of the last opponents was an LRM-5 Kintaro, he was cored in the CT, so I was aiming for it and praying that he wouldn't notice me.

No such luck. I did kill him, but he managed to launch a salvo, and I got stuck on the cliff at E6, so I couldn't dodge it.

However, that wasn't truly simultaneous. I prefer to call that 'mutual kill'. True simultaneous kills on the other hand are extremely rare but possible.

Either that game wasn't coded especially well, or likely what you could have been seen is client-server desyncronization, where your client makes it look like you had shot before you died, but to the server you did not. Milliseconds matter :)

In some games it's a deliberate design decision. AFAIK, that's pretty uncommon these days. But it's kind of like projectiles in fighting games. In Street Fighter they cancel each other out, in Mortal Kombat they pass through each other unhindered.

I have had this happen several times. You both fire nearly at the same time and each person's weapon fire is sufficient to kill the other.
