So, my 5 year old just came up with an idea sort of. He was watching me play and asked where the Elementals were. I told him they weren't in this game. Then he saw me drop an airstrike and after the aerospace fighter dropped its payload and flew away he said "Daddy, that plane should drop Elementals on the enemy and they parachute down like you used to do when you jumped out of airplanes in the Army." And I was like OMG that would be the coolest thing ever. A consumable that dropped a star of Elementals (for the Clans or just power armor infantry for the IS) that does damage over time to the nearest mech to where they land. They can be destroyed before they latch on to a mech and if you miss-deploy them and they don't land near anything within 10 meters they simply jump jet away. What do you think?

it would be ok if:
* IS has powered armor (only a few years away)
* PGI as a sort of AI for them
* They can not be used ad infinitum per match (24x for example), a command module or taking lance /company command for using them comes to my mind
* For CW all those comsumables could have a "logistic points" cost of sorts...

Your son is awesome ;). However not the first to have exactely that idea.
There was even some statement from PGI about that.
Someone else might remember it better than me.

Clans can have Elemental consumable and the IS equivalent could be a rendition of the Arrow IV.....

Elementals are nasty gals and guys in lore. So I'd rather have them implemented with competent AI. :D

Along with infantry and tanks, the presence of Elements would give players a reason to carry machine guns and smaller lasers on their mechs.

'Course, we'd need to lower the heat cap so that mechs don't just use their large lasers against them.

Maybe stayng there for 30sec and attack nearest target for dot. IS could get napalm strike for low dot and heat

Yes and No

It's not much different than Artillery Strike. It's an area of effect that's good for a certain range. 10m seems low, but the question would be raised how close is close enough? These are people with vision, and you would assume them to be intelligent to some degree. If the range is too great though, it's hard to miss...

In the end, people will just compare damage between the two and pick. I think people would have some issues with elementals doing more or similar damage as artillery strikes.

Also, would elementals persist until destroyed? If a mech is being attacked by an elemental, are the elementals only effective within a certain range from where they were dropped, or will they continue to follow the mech around the map?

if it dropped elementals it should be a point. 25 elementals from a star would be insane.

It would be lame as hell if the Elementals just died or disappeared after 30 seconds. However, there would need to be a serious cooldown to avoid both teams spamming 12 Elemental consumables at the same time. If they drop in packs of 5, that's a whole lot of NPCs for the servers to keep track of. Imagine a CW match where everyone's loading up on Elementals. People would just start dropping them near the O-gens immediately, and they'd build up their numbers untill killed. That seems a bit dumb.

I am not sure I could handle the QQ threads about the 12 man chain-dropping elemental boogeyman. We are the reason we can't have nice things.

The problem is...how much would it cost to drop such consumable?
Doesn't makes sense to cost like an arty strike and nobody would want to afford like half million c-bills to drop some 'lil guys to get roast by flamers.
