I think they thought MASC would make the Scat hard to hit, but it does not, so it's large hit boxes get it killed very fast. The three to five hardpoints means when you lose an arm or any mech section you lose 33-67% of the mech's weapons so you really have to avoid combat damage to make the mech work.

Shoot, maim, kill.
SadCat doesn't do that very well. That's the only role MWO has. Hankyu has it beaten for less tonnage.
If MASC boosted it to 130/142 (either works) it would be much more valuable, or if it worked for 20 seconds at the pitiful 10Kph boost instead of 7.5s.
Current implementation makes the SadCat sad.
Lots of Shooting, maiming and killing.

Hardpoints are rather important.
Edit: The placement is already pretty high, but the number of them are far and few in between...

Pro tip: The competitive players can play non-meta mechs better than scrub players, they just choose to play better mechs because that's how you carry scrubs. You don't get to high Elo by trolling, you do it by playing smart.
The Shadow Cat fails because of a combination of low tonnage/low hardpoints on a relatively frail chassis. It fails for the same reason the Adder does - unless you can mount significant firepower, the clan laser beam duration is too high for low armor mechs. The problem is that you can't 1v1 ANYTHING not that you can't 1v1 everything. There isn't a mech in the game that fears the Shadow Cat, which means you get chewed up. If it could harass like a Raven it would be an amazing mech, but the insane beam durations leave you open to too much return fire

A larger energy weapon heat reduction quirk and small but widespread armor quirks would pretty much take care of all of my problems with this mech.

I carry in my scats all the time. If the meta players weren't playing easy mode so much, maybe they'll do better in non 50+ point alpha mech builds.

This statement has a rather strong contradiction here. If meta players use "easy-mode" then they can carry better in their "easy-mode" mechs much easier than when playing a SCat.
Notice Fate didn't say really good players CAN'T carry with a SCat, just that they can carry harder with a better mech.
