High Ping From Aus > Oceanic

The most recent information we have based on the data we've received is that no matter where the player is located in Australia, TPG and Optus connections are only leaving through Sydney. Other ISPs are routing through Perth to reach our Singapore servers, as this will provide them with the most direct route.
This means that a player based in Perth using TPG or Optus as their ISP will first run 3000km+ to the node in Sydney. From Sydney they may then jump to New Zealand, Hawaii, Japan, and Hong Kong, before finally reaching Singapore (with a few other nodes in between).
To contrast that, a player based in Sydney under Telstra or iiNet will typically run from Sydney > Perth > Singapore (with a few nodes in between). A Telstra or iiNet player in Perth would run Perth > Singapore with nodes in between.
I'm going to be putting up a main thread in the Developer Outreach sub-forum tomorrow morning to provide players in the Oceanic region with a central place to post and compare trace routes, ping results, and ISP information. Hopefully we can work together to identify the worst cases and see what can be done to improve the situation.

And yes you have correctly identified the most rubbish (and two out of three) largest ISPs in Australia - it is no surprise that their routing is rubbish, unfortunately iiNet has been taken over by TPG as well so it may well be a matter of time before my ping goes rubbish too.

Will be good to compare results. If TPG continues to be a problem I can see a change of provider in my near future...........

If I knew which IP/hostname to ping for MWO, I could provide an accurate demonstration of the problem. Anyone have any ideas what I should be pinging? I might have to break out wireshark or something and work out where PGI's servers are being hosted.

Basically TPG is screwing it's customers by routing some (but not all) traffic to Singapore very inefficiently. I guess someone in Wargaming.Net negotiated with them to get better routes. So much for "Net neutrality". It would be interesting to see someone on Optus in Perth do the same test.

Yeah I have put in a ticket. I guess the pipes out of Sydney cost a lot less than the pipes out of Perth. And if you think those are expensive, you should see how much a pint of beer costs here.

It's good that you're on an ISP that doesn't bounce you through Tokyo to get to Singapore, but that doesn't help the rest of us. I've found a couple of other players on TPG and encouraged them to also raise tickets. Maybe TPG will take notice, but who knows. They asked for my phone number so they could call me. As if somehow speaking to me about their choice of routing is going to make some difference.

It's the Telstra and iiNet ISP groups mainly that are routing correctly - however, iiNet will be formally owned by TPG soon.

iiNet is routing properly through Perth at the moment so you will be fine until TPG takes over. PGI are using different hosting to WoT so you should not expect the same experience. I'm not sure why you believe they are in the same location (unless you mean Singapore...)
