Ive never noticed this... i run 1pt of rear armor on most builds as it is...
Red hud streak is your best friend...
Also learn to traverse your torso while running and pilot via the minimap... dont give them your rear...
But yeah.. im one of those lights that back core larger mechs... usually get them in 2 salvos if they run light rear armor..

Just had this happen to me tonight on Tera Therma in the middle of the domination zone. I was being hit in the back with erll by an ECM ArctCh and their was no sound at all, just paper doll changes.

Necro thread!! But I've had this happen to me periodically over the last 6 months. I just figured it was a code glitch because most of the time I do get a hit noise when being lasered from the back.

+1 here.
No pattern to see, sometimes I get cored in the back and there is just not any sound.

This is still happening. Every time for me on Polar Highlands, coming from the base, walking to the group and suddenly I fall over dead. No sound whatsoever or indication that I'm being hit.
I understand it might show on the paper doll, but seriously do you think a guy in the cockpit wouldn't hear his mech getting chewed up being shot in the back? I don't understand why it hasn't been solved to where you hear yourself being shot in the back.
I think it has become such a known bug, almost every time I play polar highalands I see a light mech running down the right side towards the base to see if anyone is lagging behind he can get a free kill on
When I have been taken down I have had at least 12 rear armor so I know he has to be shooting for a fair amount of time to core my back out. I'm sure its funny for people that take advantage of flaws in the game to see a heavy or even an annhilator fall over dead totally oblivious why. It only says engine explosion, shot by machine gun and/or light laser fire.
Through the thread someone stated this was a problem from as far back as 2012 or 2011 and its sad that it has been overlooked this long and now so many people are taking advantage of the obvious flaw in the game.

It's not easy for a newbie but you have to learn how to divide up your attention. None of the veterans fail to turn around when I start shooting them in the back, only people who are so tunnel visioned that they lose peripheral vision and also hearing.

Everyone offering advice on situational awareness, dividing attention and so on here is offering great advice. However, the issue people are reporting is not "I'm really new at this game and didn't notice the sound of the incoming fire or damage", it is "the damage made no sound" when they have become accustomed to it doing so, i.e. something felt wrong / different.
This has happened to me too. Situation:
- Polar Highlands
- Split off from the group (broke off to murder a pesky light, was returning to the group)
- Was getting shot by another light mech from behind, with smallish lasers, and at extreme range (too far to hear them firing or the light's footsteps)
- Heard no burn / impact / damage sounds of any sort
- Saw no directional damage received cues (although I could possibly have missed them, who knows)
- Maybe not important, but was using Dolby 5.1 capable headphones... not sure if the Dolby was switched on or off.
Anyway, everyone look at my post count and explain to me how to play the game now, thanks.

Necroing this post again. After Googling the issue it's sad to see people in this thread who are incapable of reading or critical thought who misinterpret what this post is about and blame it on skill level. I experienced this many times over the years but never bothered to post on the forums. I'm sure it won't make a difference now (as it hasn't before) amongst all the other issues with this old game but I've had this same issue since at least ~2015. I notice it often while playing stealth mechs and I believe it only happens with laser fire.
And no, this isn't a case of being a noob who can't maintain situational awareness. I've been pinned at T1 ever since tiers were created and am ranked #662 overall, top 3% of active players.

It does happen to me when I am getting hit, and no audio from said hit. Should actually hear something from the said hit. As you would getting shot in the front. Shoudl still get some form of audio from the back, and or sides.
