I still have no idea how to use them, when do I use override shutdown and completely turning my mech off? I know it reduces my mech damage when I override shutdown during overheating but can I just keep override shutdown on for the whole duration of the game? is there any disadvantages of having them on the whole time?

You'll kill yourself very quickly is you overheat with override on.
BY overheat, I mean going above the 100% tresh hold.

In CW I once watched a 1v3 clutch that won the game. Our last guy was in a light and he used override to deliver an alpha and shutdown IN COVER instead of shutting down right in front of the enemy. This is proper use of Override, imo.

I once accidentally trapped myself in a corner where the only way back to my team was to cross a firing line of enemy mechs that would most certainly kill me. I decided to turn my mech off in the corner. I watched several enemy mechs pass me and pay no mind to me. I turned back on and foolishly ran back into death. I could've just gone around. In any case, the first part is a good use of shutdown.

Use override shutdown when you're the last mech surrounded by enemy. Hold down all mouse buttons and go out in a blaze of glory.

Override is used to commit suicide and prevent the enemy from getting another kill :P

If you wanna get really fancy, you do it with MASC.

I follow these rules.

Know you're heat output.

Work your way up to 80%, depending on the situation turn on Override, then start chainfiring until you hear Betty engage the override, then stop firing.

Use betty's warning as a threshold to stop, if you go over it a little its not going to kill you most times unless its an ERPPC or other high output weapon that will push far over your cap.

If you're Cored on a vital spot, and you stop.. you're dead anyway. OVERRIDE! GIVE EM HELL!

If you're up against 6 guys at once all shooting the crap out of you. OVERRIDE! GIVE EM HELL!

Override = Berserker mode

Turn off = Hidey mouse mode

There are good ways to use both.

Learning how to use override shutdown is a pretty valuable thing. If you can manage it properly you can often save yourself out of dire situations. The thing is, taking 5-10 damage to an internal structure is mostly better than shutting down in front of 1 or multiple enemys, because that means death. Off course, if you overextend you will lose some parts or even your CT/cockpit blows up.

*the percentages are only estimates.
At 105-110 % you often take no damage while still being able to move out of danger. Anything above that should be met with caution because you will take damage and the risk of dying. You can even push it to 130-140% if your in an assault without losing components. But thoses components will take significant damage and might blow up with ammo or gauss in it. Just don't try it with lights or mediums. Mechs with low HP on internal structure will die and you shouldn't get above the magic 110% were you can still come out undamaged.

Heat dissipation is also pretty important because you don't want to be to long above 100%. If you have 10 DHS on Terra Therma and alphad up to 130% then your chances of surviving are pretty slim.
Another thing already mentioned: you can shut yourself down in deactivating the override, so you take less damage. If you are at 130% and safe to shut down, shut down. You will take less damage while you cool down to >100%.

It's a gamble I'm willing to take because it saved me many times. Occasionally I blow myself up because of bad luck or because I wasn't careful enough but those things tend to happen.

I'm probably different than most. The first thing I do every match is start with shutdown overridden. Shutting down in front of the enemy is almost always a death sentence. Start the match firing an alpha (away from your teammates), to see how much that boosts your heat. Now you know when you have to switch to chainfire or use less heat intensive weapons (depending on your build). I'll stay overridden until the match is well in hand, only then will I turn it off. I have gotten many kills in a hopeless situation by overriding shutdowns.

Deliberate shutdown is far more situational. Used to be if you shutdown, you cooled off faster than staying on and waiting for your heat sinks to drop your heat. But that was removed many patches ago. Shutting down to break middle lock can be used, but when they lose lock, missiles continue to fly to their last location. So unless you shutdown mid-jump you'll still get hit. If your getting pounded by multiple rounds of missiles you can shutdown if in cover to break their lock, wait a few seconds and power-up again, and that usually works (and hopefully someone knocks out the UAV while you're shutdown). Shutting down in a remote location to secure the win in conquest is probably the most frequent use. That usually works best on bigger maps like tour, but it can be effective. Of course some people shutdown during skirmish to hide from the other team at the end of the match, PGI has said it's OK as long as you contributed during the match, but expect some of your teammates to report your location. Yeah that's illegal, but it happens. I usually just keep override on, try to separate the enemy, and go for that one extra kill. Shutting down to ambush the enemy is tough, as when you power-up, you're probably in range of quite a few of them, but if done correctly it can be a lot of fun (The B33f has a video of pulling that off in a dire wolf, and it's histerical).

Override is most useful when you just barely cross the shutdown threshold (back to 99% in 1 or 2 seconds). You take a lot less damage than you would have being stationary in front of a bunch of enemy 'mechs.

And as others have said, it's also great when you know you're gonna die. Hit the override and just keep firing until you melt. It's pretty rare that I don't take at least one of them down with me when I do this.
