They could work around that by having a class Elo and a chassis Elo. When you start a new mech the Elo is initially set to the weight class Elo (which would be no worse for matchmaking than it is now) and as you play the chassis the mech Elo would change from the class seed value for that particular chassis. Your weight class Elo would change every time you play a mech in that weight class while the chassis specific one would change only when playing that chassis.
In addition, as far as I know, PGI has the records of all matches ever played so it would be a relatively simple task to write a piece of code to generate chassis specific Elo values for all players ... assuming they wanted to do so.
