I'm sure it'll get some kind of extra armor + structure in the next balancing pass to help it out. Its vulnerability until it gets into a brawl is its biggest problem right now. It's helpless at range and the current meta does not favor brawly 'Mechs at all.

Give it +15-20 armor per torso component let us bathe in the tears of our enemies. It'd make it extremely tough to crack and perhaps would make it a fearful "aww not this sh*t again" sight rather than a "Free damage for everyone!" sight.

I really miss the feeling you had of piloting an Atlas back in beta. It felt like an unstoppable killing machine that could take so much damage and keep on going. When you turned a corner and ran into one it was an "oh ****" moment. Now it's almost surprising to see one in game and you know its right torso is going to be gone in four seconds. An Arctic Cheater is more menacing.

That feeling of fear needs to be brought back.

Try Stock Mech Mondays (3025 tier 1 tech only)...turning a corner alone and seeing an Atlas is still very intimidating.

As an example, the Atlas build I have here could have an additional 688 pts of armor for that 20.5 tons spare. That's more than Double it's armor. And while this means that the Atlas would not be a powerhouse in terms of Firepower, it would be able to take tremendous amounts of punishment.

Edit: Actually, you'd run Ferro instead of Endo for this, as the more armor you have, the better Ferro gets. Also, the Head should still be restricted to 18 armor.

So in effect, you would then have an Atlas "Assault Mech" with a mere 33 points of combined total armor... Why ever shoot at any of those 350 hp RT/CT/LT when the Head will go away very much easier. Just like legging a Light. ;)

Curb the meta, then you will see Atlas' feared like they should be.

Honestly, I do not run meta builds so these things are a pain to kill, like any assault should be. Every problem with MWO stems from the meta. Low TTK, weapon nerfs, double armor, quirks, et al. It all comes down to players using meta builds.

As far as making the Atlas more intimidating, two things come to mind:

1) GIVE US BACK THE GLOWING EYES ALREADY!!!!!!! ....Seriously....

2) Make a special vanity item, similar to a cockpit item, that can be worn outside the Mech. Specifically, make it a necklace of Light Mech skulls.

the reason there is so much meta is yet again the total freedom of the mechlab, Where assets can be swapped in and out with out any consideration for the mechs construction.

I think a lot of people miss the days when turning a corner and encountering the glowing eyes of an Atlas would make you **** your pants. Even when I started playing (after the glowing eyes, sadly), the Atlas would send most guys running.

You can increase armour and structure untill the Atlas is as indestructible as the cars in River City, but it's never going to really scare anyone as long as many heavy mechs have more firepower. 4Mlas, AC20 and some SRMs just isn't very scary anymore. And some indestructible mech running around at ~50 kph with mediocre firepower just means people will try to avoid and ignore it.

If the Atlas had the same hardpoint inflation that the King Crab got, it would be a different story. I don't like hardpoint inflation, but in the case of old mechs like the Atlas, I don't mind it. PGI already has all the 3d models needed to give the Atlas as many hardpoints as the the King Crab. All the three King Crab variants have 10 hardpoints each. So for the Atlas, that would be:

AS7-D: 6E, 2B, 2M
AS7-RS: 8E. 1B. 1M
AS7-S: 4E, 2B, 4M
AS7-D-DC: 4E, 3B, 3M
AS7-K: 6E, 1B, 3M
AS7-BH: 6E, 3B, 1M

Then give some armour and structure quirks to compensate for the tall profile, if needed.

Just to be clear, I don't want TTK to go down. But it doesn't help the TTK to have mechs like the Catapult, Commando and Atlas running around with fewer hardpoints, because it just means most people won't play those mechs anymore.

Giving the AS7 more energy points would make it a very potent platform. Now just give it CTF 0XP quirks too.

You know theres an issue with TTK when youre in an atlas (BH) and the first time you see an enemy, you get popped from the CT - thats over a hundred damage easy as my CT fromt is like 108

I have to admit even though I mostly play clans and have never run one, the Atlas is not scary to go up against. I remember a while back when we had a few mechs instead of the amount we do now. The Atlas was formidable, however now that clans and new IS mechs are here will the amount of firepower they carry it simply isn't a worry. So I'm for buffing something....

One way to make Mechs with mixed loadout like this viable is to nerf the effectiveness of specialist Mechs aka boaters, i.e. rework the convergence mechanism so that you can't build a superweapon out of a handful of the same weapons.

Problem being many stock builds are boats

Awesome 8q
Hunchback 4p
All Kintaros
Jenner F
Catapults that are not the K2

All these and more are "boats" in their native configurations or lend to becoming boats due to hardpoint limitations.

Should these mechs be stillborn trash just because specialist builds are currently (and always have been) the superior method of design in MWo?

I don't think more hardpoints are really what the Atlas needs. Unless those hardpoints are on top of the shoulder pads, it's still going to be worse than the King Crab, Dire Wolf, and Banshee at laser/gauss boating. It's just not the right chassis to enter that competition.

It also detracts from the Atlas as an icon of Mechwarrior and Battletech lore, being missile and ballistic laden, with lasers only serving as backup weaponry, and the arms serving more for close combat (someday) than for ranged attack. Sure, lore is lore and this is a game, but it was never really an energy-based mech, so why turn it (of all mechs) into one? Just play the Banshee?

Furthermore, it's not like we're wanting for more 95-100t pulse/laser/gauss wombo combo mechs. Why squander the opportunity to make the Atlas fulfill the role of a brawler a little better?

IMO:

Acceleration low/med/high: +15%
Deceleration low/med/high: +15%
CT: 35 pts
LT: 25 pts
RT: 25 pts
LL: 20 pts
RL: 20 pts
Torso turn rate: +15%
Speed: +5%

The problems with the Atlas can't really be fixed with weapons perks (or hardpoints), since its issue with damage output is almost always positioning-based rather than the chassis being lacking in raw numbers.

I think you would see less regular boating on chassis who arent designed for that.
