River City, dusk. My team and I are carried to out drop zones in and around the industrial sector of River City. I am in my Shadow Cat P and tired of fighting around the citadel and the tank farm so I head up from the power plant thinking in the darkness I might be able to flank around for some hit-and-run strikes on rear torsos. As I head up to the tunnel from the water, it is just so quiet so I check my minimap and notice a Jenner has decided to follow me on my little recon run.
Then everything goes horribly wrong. Seems the other team had the same idea and their assault lance dropped up on the runway because as I crest the ridge and look into the tunnel a King Crab comes marching out. I dump a panicked double burst from my UAC/10 and slammed on my jump jets to get out of his arc of fire while the Jenner cut loose with lasers. Assuming a King Crab would just ignore a pair of ankle biters and keep coming to bring its twin bundles of ballistic death to bare, I circle around up top hoping to get some shots on his broad back. Instead, he backs into the tunnel as fast as he can. Thinking I had just found MWO's second most skittish King Crab I move towards the river to get a better angle on the tunnel. My paper doll lights up as my Shadow Cat rocks from missiles as I am struck by a volley of LRMs and lasers. Bolting back the way I had come hoping to lose my slower pursuers. I get my wish as a Victor and Stalker stall at the top the ridge, the Jenner is not so lucky. A pair of Ravens race down the hill behind me, but scatter as lasers, PPCs, and autocannon shells rake the hill side. I check the minimap again and to my surprise my whole team had decided to follow me. My smile dies prematurely as Betty warns about incoming missiles just as LRMs pepper the top of my 'Mech and SRMs laid bare my rear torsos right as I reach the bottom of the hill. I twist left as far as I can to discover a Hellbringer with speed tweak keeping up with my Shadow Cat. Holding down MASC, I swerve back towards the hill trying to round the corner and put some cover between me and the Hellbringer while firing my Ultra. Explosions from my autocannon shells and the bright blue streaks of ASRMS and LRMs racing to blast armor from my torsos and left arm draws my team's attention and the Hellbringer rocks under PPC and AC fire while lasers rake across its arms and torsos. I let up on MASC as I round the corner and then I notice the Hellbringer's side torsos are exposed. Re-engaging MASC and spinning to the right, I unload on the charging 'Mech, letting my MGs strip first its right then left torsos. My poor Shadow Cat is the worse for the wear for this exchange, loosing all my rear armor and much of my front armor.
Hugging the wall and hoping not to be noticed I look towards the lower city for more targets as weapons fire lights the night between the hill and the rocks my team is sheltering in. Turns out the wall is a pretty good shelter with the way my team is positioned, any 'Mech foolish enough to try and get a bead on me becomes exposed to fire. Still my Shadow Cat is once again rocked by SRMs, but this time I turn to see a Huggin covered with blossoming explosions and dancing lasers racing past. I add to its misery with my own weapons and with a flash of light it topples into the water, leaving only a greasy column of smoke to mark its passing. I turn back towards the upper city in time to see the second Raven, a 3L, race towards my team. Darting forward, my MGs gut its left torso and it too drops into the water.
For the next several minutes or so I skulk through the river about the base of the cliff, exchanging some long range skirmishing shots with the King Crab and a Nova while taking some LRM fire from a frustratingly elusive Battlemaster. It has become a peek and poke stand off with neither side willing to expose themselves for more than a hurried shot. This skirmishing cost my team a lance of 'Mechs, and the other team a Nova, the Stalker, and a Jagermech. The King Crab finally drops under concentrated long range fire and I decide it is time to scout out for my team once again. Jumping to see what is up on the airstrip I spot a Victor and a Locust, though neither notice me. I dart up the ramp and race to the Victor, tapping out several Ultra bursts across its chest, trying to focus on its exposed right torso. When it turns to face me, I open up with my MGs and am rewarded by an explosion and a collapsing 'Mech. The Locust tries to flank me, but backs into a building when I turn to face it. My UAC jams on the first shot, but a hail of fire from half a dozen MGs makes short work of its red CT. An Arrow rounds one of the blast barriers and lights up my battered Shadow Cat with its Large Pulse Laser and MGs. Again the UAC jams, but it at least it gave me three bursts and my MGs and TC1 give me all the edge I need to bring it down. Meanwhile, my team has charged across from its hiding place in the rocks.
Checking my paper doll and ammo the last exchange cost me dearly. Armor stripped from all locations except the head, one red leg and the rest orange or getting there, less than 600 rounds for the MGs, and twelve for the Ultra, I hope the remaining 'Mechs are doing more poorly than I am. It seems the Nova is at least with two exposed side torso and a missing arm it is being pressured by the rest of my team. Throwing caution to the wind I charge to the ledge overlooking the lower city and leap at Nova and again my Ultra jams after a double burst. The Nova has lost its left torso and leg so I round a building in pursuit and get right up in its face once again bringing my autocannon to bare while adding MGs to the mix. My boldness is rewarded by a flying arm and the Nova collapsing at my Shadow Cat's feet and then immediately punished by a shower of LRMs which takes my now useless right arm. I bolt around a building, hoping to flank a wounded Battle master and instead come face to face with an almost untouched Battlemaster. Leaping over the Battlemaster and tucking into a pocket so no more of the dreaded LRMs can come my way I take stock of my 'Mech again. 354 rounds of MG ammo for six MGs, right torso and leg are red, center torso and left arm dark orange, and left torso and leg are orange, but I have half a company's worth of backup. I wait for my chance, no point squandering MG ammo on fresh armor. Making my way to the corner, I peek back around as I hear the sounds of PPCs and lasers. The Battlemaster is no match for the concentrated fire and I pounce when I see exposed torso sections. Six MGs spit out a wall of lead, but they run dry mere seconds before the Battlemaster drops.
End Match Screen
Finding a fully armored Battlemaster in a nearly dead Shadow Cat armed only with MGs and nearly out of ammo, never going to forget that.
