Super awesome suggestion...
We could minimize PGI's expenses while maximizing our own enjoyment by employing "drag-and-drop" customizations. You drag a spike from inventory, and drop it where you want it to go. Grab an antenna, and drop it here, or there. Then you check-out and payy for your little addons with MC.
That way all PGI has to do is make the drag-and-drop aplet and some 3d models for spikes and addons, and POOF money. You can provide a simple choice of colors for the addons, so cammo compatibility will not be an issue. It also won't affect any special geometries or anyone's hitboxes as long as the addons don't have any collision meshes for objects of projectiles/Lasers.
This kind of drag-and-drop customization would be epic, cheap for them, fun for us, generate money, and won't affect gameplay or the in-game models at all.

All the ideas from the original post are great. I don't even necessarily need them to be custom camo compatible. Alternate heads, bike rack stuff like the Phoenix mechs, antennae, radar dish, all that.
Make it cheap and fun to buy and make some things that are useable on all mechs. Like a radar dish can be bought once and used on any mech. Or antennae. Attachment points for general accessories. Warframe prices stuff like that around $2. The sweet spot. Then I can buy multiples, buy bundles for discount, change them every day.
100% okay if the cockpit stays the same with changed external geo on the head.

Could do some really cool stuff for some 'Mechs like giving the Shadowhawk even more talon like hands with only three or four fingers, give Wolverines knuckle spikes, or Commandos different heads.

It wouldn't always look great, but it is possible to have massive amounts of custom geometry without having to have unique textures for each and without the massive file sizes that would entail. Plus, if you give all mechs HD textures, you remove aliasing from stretching.
