Have a founders Catapult that I love (yes I like LRM support) I have tried moving to brawling and didnt like it. Been trying to find a good direct fire support build something mid-long ranged.
Ran around in the shadowhawk 2d and 2h when they first came out. Currently running a 2k with 3 ERLL. It doesnt seem to have any kick, suffering from low damage each game, and I just get cored anyways (Maybe I am playing it wrong)
Thoughts on a good medium or heavy (maybe assault) that I can use for a good direct firesupport mech?

If you're running with ERLL, you really shouldn't be closing to much less than 3-400m if it's avoidable. The Shadowhawk has decent mobility, but the 2K doesn't really seem to have useful quirks. A pair of PPCs might work, though the 10% velocity bonus isn't enough imo.
This is what I'd start with - unfortunately, the engine is expensive, but you could get it from another mech. Most lights will work you over, so stay away from them (or with the group if you can), change out for ER PPCs if you have good aim, or switch to SSRM 2s and cut the engine to a 275. Realistically, you need the tonnage and speed for this particular mech, and they're pretty XL friendly due to their mobility.
The 2K does have a missile cooldown quirk, though, so you could take advantage of it, like so.
Edit: Yeah, I know you asked for fire support mechs. I've been having a fair bit of luck with the WVR-6K. Just don't lose that right arm, or the darn thing becomes near worthless.

I run my C1 Catapult with 300XL (a good engine for Catapults, Dragons, Jenners, and any of the 55-ton mechs), endo, +6 double sinks, 2xLL, 2xML, 2xLRM10 (4 tons ammo), 2xjump jet, rest is armor (I think I cut the legs to around 49, everywhere else is maxed). I hang around at mid range and provide IDF support and toss in the large lasers here and there. When the ammo runs out or the crap hits the fan, all those lasers are a LOT more firepower than most people expect in a Catapult.
There are plenty of variations on the Catapult running around out there. One of my friends runs it with 2xLRM15, 1xERLL, 3xML. I know a guy that runs 2xLRM15 with 3xSPL and TAG. There are a bunch of ways to run Catapults, and a lot of them work. Just keep in mind that you don't really have a brawler's hitboxes, that CT is pretty big and your arms don't shield well. Long range support and hit-and-evade are where the Catapult shines.

You can always go ECM, 3x AMS and ER PPC on a Kitfox.

Shadow hawk 2k is going to be about the best you can get, if it's not working yet you just need more practice.
Mediums are excessively difficult to score well in so don't feel bad if it takes a while.
You won't post passive damage in a she anyway, focus on effective damage and kills (xls and cts)
Wvr6k will put out more dps but you're going to find it more difficult to use the low slung arm.
If or when they scale down the qkd it will be as effective or better than the hawk.
Grasshopper is amazing at direct fire support but with the hardpoints locations you will probably feel like your swimming with ankle weights.
Timbers and hellbngers are probably the best heavies for the role.
Battle masters, stalkers, and bashes will be your best bet for direct fire support. Stalker is slow, but banshee can keep up with mediums with a big xl engine.
High mounted, clustered energy hardpoints are key.
Hbk great too, but if you don't like the shd you won't like the hbk.

Have you considered a Griffin-2N? Run 2x PPC and ECM, with some SRM's when things get too close for PPC's
