I am a newer player and I have the dire whale pack and the cauldron born pack only.
I have no other mechs and no IS mechs so I cannot compare IS/CL.
I will say this the EBJ teaches you the value of high hardpoints and how to use them but is very unforgiving of mistakes.

To use me as an example, I have CW games where I do 400+ damage in one and then 65 damage in the second one.
The reasons for this are I believe the following.
A: I am new
B: The enemy smartly closed in on me to brawling range with good open lines of fire. (She cant take a hit for ****)
C: When they did I had a build not suited to med range and therefore between my wrong build/mech (for that situation), lack of skill (torso twisting for example isn't like in other mechs as stated earlier, one wrong twist and you are cored fast)and easy to smash hit boxes I was toast.

Glass cannon is perfect for this mech, which brings up a kind of funny story.

I use the he!! out of my EBJs they are the only mechs I have all mastered. (3 of them I don't have the C for some reason known only to well not me)
What makes this funny is I assumed that all mechs were like paper armor wise and I forgot I wasn't in an EBJ.
So I upgraded my collection and got the Dire Wolf pack.
I am in mine for the 1st time using 2xERLL + 2xLPL + 2xAC5.
I come slowly around a corner and there is one of those 99 laser IS heavies which I later learned was a Thunderbolt.
Anyways he blasts me and I am so used to having to run and twist from them that that is my initial reaction.
Only I am in a Dire Wolf this time so I move a lot slower and twist slower as well I think.
I look at my paper doll and to my surprise I have taken almost no damage.
That's when it hits me...I am not in an EBJ I am in a Dire Whale. (Achievement unlocked went full noob) lol
I auto kill my reverse and twisting and push forward torso twisting as I come around the corner and manage to take two mechs out without taking much damage at all.
Knowing which mech you are actually using is OP :)
In short I feel it is a great mech, as long as you can use the types of play that it was designed for effectively.

Call me petty but when they got rid of the Triss breakdance of death animation on it, I went elsewhere.

The EBJ might not have ECM like the HBR however on a max-armour podspace comparison:

HBR - 23.31 Tons
EBJ - 28.51 Tons

That's an extra 5 tons...

MInus the 1 ton of ECM that 80% of builds use.

So 6 extra tons....

BUt the Epic BJ is awesome, My 3 uac5 and plethora of small lasers one is by far my favorite....But glass cannon it sure is.

Dual gauss is fun as well and i run Gauss and ERPPC for CW.

The Cauldron is noticeably less durable than the Hellbringer, but it lasts long enough to get its job done. It's a good heavy, but can't tank quite as well as some others can.

I was about to say, I think the Hellbringer with its ECM and more concentrated hardpoints is actually better (mostly eye level on the left and right torsos), that being said, the Ebon Jag can bring more guns to the party. I still enjoy playing my Ebon Jags, but the Hellbringer makes it real easy to avoid fire (no dorito with ECM, and the hardpoints let you poke around cover a lot better).
