A question to my fellow 50-or-so General regulars, and to all the lurkers. Which mechs and mech packs from Resistance 2 and Origins did you pre-order? I'd be interested in seeing what people are buying and hearing your thoughts.

I personally bought the Black Knight. I have all variants of 3 light mechs, 3 medium mechs, 3 assault mechs and only 2 heavy mechs, so I needed a third and only the Black Knight suited my needs. It may be the last mech I pre-order, at least for a year or two.

Looking at the Instagram preview, it looks like they've already made a variant with ballistics in the right arm. I guess this is for a Black Knight hero mech to be released at some point, like the IV Four ballistic hero variant of the Quickdraw?

I'm not pre-ordering any Origin mech packs although I'm pretty interested in buying them all for C-bills at some point. It was tempting to buy the Jenner IIC pack for $20, but I've spent too much money already.

How about you guys?

I skipped both of these packs actually. As much as I want the Mauler the rest of the Resistance 2 pack being all laser vomit did nothing for me. Toyed with the idea of doing the Hunch and Jenner IIC but meh, will just wait it out.

Origins would be the better purchase. Superior Clan tech + IS level customization is so engaging in concept. Gimme that Clan XL, gimme that 2 slot DHS, gimme that 7 slot enfo/ferro, gimme that 12 ton Gauss, gimme that half weight LRMs, and gimme that sweet sweet CERML. The Highlander IIC-C is gonna be the first mech ever in this game to brandish Dual CUAC10/LB10X in one arm. And I am gonna boat ALRM60 on that 4 missile HGN-IIC-B or ON1-IIC-A, and have enough back up weapons. No regret selling my IS Highlanders.

Best of all? Though the IIC are Clan mechs--they cost only $80 for the biggest pack, as opposed to $120 like Invasion Clan mech packs. Plus you can put on the sweet Wolf/Falcon/Ghost Bear camo on those mechs! Still, I am not gonna buy the pack though. Just personal feeling towards PGI--the pack itself is good.

Resistance 2 is just a boring laser-vomit pack, unless you spent $80 and bought the Mauler. That 90 ton mech is gonna be fun.

I haven't bought any. The last time I spent money on this game was for a founder's package. The prices are a joke - way beyond anything I can justify spending money on. $30+ for an assault mech? Hell no! I could buy another entire GAME for that price, and it wouldn't even have to be on sale. Moreover, if I outright buy whatever game it is, it'll be mine forever, unlike a mech that I buy for MWO, which will one day close its doors. Hell, I could also use that cash to buy 50 rounds of 7.62x51 NATO ammo (brass-cased, brand new) for my AR-10 or go out and pay for my portion of a rather nice dinner at a fancy restaurant.

Additionally, the major selling point that got me to invest in the game as a founder in the first place, community warfare, turned out to be a joke. It didn't even come close to living up to its potential.

Don't get me wrong, I still play MWO as a mech-themed FPS, but it's not enough for me to be interested in spending money on it, especially not at PGI's prices. They're geared towards what's known in the F2P industry as "whales", which I certainly am not.

TL;DR Prices too high, content too low. I might've occasionally spent a few bucks on the game if the prices were more reasonable, but even then I wouldn't be a major spender.

Haven't put more than $7- 14 USD into game since pheonix pack. As a light pilot the... new shiny best light in the game... is very tempting seeing as the raven was my favorite before the borking of its hit boxes/missile hit detection and spider became new favorite. I can't justify paying for much other than some colors or patterns though, already so much spent what $600? It's a shame because a lot of the things I complained about are now functioning except one really big thing: A Story and reason to keep playing.

All of them. I've seriously debated canceling Resistance 2 because I think only the fat stuff may be useful and I tend to light stuff, but the grab bag made me decide to keep it because grab bag.

All of them. Top tier every one. Call me a completionist, OCD, pokemech, whatever. Mostly because I like the artwork, a bit because I want to support this game.

In no instance have I ever bought based on the ability or the perceived ability of any chassis/variant to be meta.

I bought both full level packs (im a bit... whale-y at times, though i dont buy anything except packs).

Bought R2 primarily for the Mauler which i think is going to be up there with the Banshee as best IS assault mech, but i wanted the BK as well just for looks so bought the pack. Crab variant with JJs might be decent but depends on hitboxes, BKs viability is entirely dependent on quirks (no energy range + energy heat = doa, considering the low mounted hardpoints) and I cannot see any way the Wolfhound isnt going to suck. Its just a FS9 with less hardpoints and no JJs, and doesnt even have the big energy thing to quirk for like the PNT.

Bought Origins largely for the Hunchback and Jenner, but i am sort of looking forward to the Highlander with 2xUAC10 in one arm. I still have no clue how PGI plan to balance this stuff though, its going to be hilariously OP with clan tech + full customisation - the salvation may be that the Jenner will be all CT, the Hunchie will have worse ST hitboxes than the mad dog and the Onion and Highlander have .. not very meta hardpoints.

If i think im likely to cave and buy a pack i always buy it immediately so i get all the bonuses.

I ignore clan packs. Have to draw the financial line somewhere.

I bought founders to support the game, I bought a clan pack because clans were going to be over powered and I was still having fun at the time. I almost bought IIC pack, but they had things in the pipeline that I thought my ruin my experience playing, which boy was I right. So I'm glad I didn't by the IIC and I'm still glad I got my Phoenix pack refunded.

Honestly haven't had any good reasons / feelings to buy MWO content. Now that my cbill earnings are dirt because I can't keep up with the skilled upper tiers I'm thinking it's time to turn on my Premium time and let it tick like a clock for my retirement.

Just the Origins Hunchy pack, didn't see any reason to pay money for anything else since I am content to wait for them to be out for CBills.

I bought Resistance I, but skipped II because even though the Crab and the Black Knight look friggin sweet, they're all lasers and thus pretty boring.

I've not touched clan tech at all, but I'll probably pick up the IIC mechs for CBILLs when they come out.

I am not a whale as it is defined. However I love playing MWO. Buying select packs and mastery packs is mostly based on my battle tech love of the chassis. I have bought up to the Stormcrow on invasion, all of resistance 1 and up to the shadowcat of the last clan package. I really don't play a lot of games so I spend some cash on my addiction of choice.
