So far I've run through the basic tutorial and I have to say I'm genuinely impressed. I have to be honest and say it surpassed all expectations I had.

I really think you've managed to capture all of the basics of how to control a mech. The only thing I think you can add is an explanation of how to turn armlock off and on in the settings as well as the gas pedal engine control, possibly giving the pilot the option to change these during the tutorial. My only other minor gripe is the choice of a mech with an offset cockpit, that slightly off-centred view might confuse some people.

Other than those very minor gripes, this new Academy is very well polished and produced and is a fantastic addition to the game. Perhaps new accounts should also get a pop-up to launch this when they login for the first time.

Oh, I know I'm nit-picking a little bit here but unfortunately the Academy isn't really a exact representation of the current gameplay experience content-wise but of course this is hopefully going to improve over time.

I'm going to try the rest of the Academy outside of the basic training now and I'll update this post as and when I finish it.

Excellent work PGI.

Update: Perhaps you could also add a bit about the 3rd person camera and its advantages and drawbacks of using it.

Rapid Fire Challenge: Quite a useful exercise in training yourself to target with a slow twisting mech. Instead of ramping the health of the turrets up by 0.5 each round, increments of 1.0 would probably be better as it eventually becomes more of a chore than a challenge. Perhaps you could also have the turrets placed randomly within that zone as it became quite easy to run the same pattern to kill them.

Changing mechs: Great to see a varied selection of mechs and loadouts to change into along with the action of swapping mechs. However after I swapped to the Jagermech, I currently have no HUD at all - no targeting reticle, minimap, weapon status, personal ragdoll or target ragdoll. Changing back to the Thunderbolt brings it back but only whilst you're in the Thunderbolt.

...The HUD seems to be working now. Not sure what I did so I'll have to try and replicate it. Seems like if you shoot the captain to get him to kill you, when you respawn and power up the HUD reappears.

...Or you can just power down then power up.

Gauntlet: A good exercise in snap shooting while running and identifying where incoming fire coming from. At some point in one of the exercises/tutorials it might be a good idea to explain about the directional damage indicators on the HUD. Oh and nice touch when destroying a Jenner you spawned an Atlas in its place :D

Impressed so far great job o7

Through basic and still impressed

I am sure there will be hundreds of other ideas many people will want but here is a few that popped into my head...

Was unable to ESC from starting intro animation or skip over. A disable/enable function for each step intro screen after each has been seen.

Have multiple random start points for mechs in the gauntlet or even have them switch to other nearby locations between runs.

Have additional non active turrets during Rapid Fire training.

Distracting dropship flying overhead in later rounds.

Change up turret start points between Rapid Fire rounds.

Have a all Clan version with Clan mech choices using some of previous clan invasion video to help give a little history.

Put together some of the various promo videos previously made and use in the intro. Or put them together as clickable "InnerSphereNews" reports.

Car kill counter

just for the fun when the instructor says at the beginning "dont scratch off the paint" or something like that make him go angry if you collide with something

and perhaps some other picture for the instructor

did the basic training so far and its pretty nice

edit: zooming out the minimap would be nice and sme way to refill ammo ( or i didnt found it)

edit edit: give every turred in rapid fire a triangle could be confusing/frustrating for someone new the 2. from the left side is hardly to see

let the instructor say something if overheat kills you atm he just say something when you overheat (or let him say that overheat can kill you not just that you take dmg)

Well that was fun.

For those wanting some info

-The VO guy for the tutorial sounds like he came from Venture Bros. This is good, because it makes the Star Citizen one look even worse than it already is.
-All targets are standing still. Despite this, the tutorials make good use of it. The gauntlets teach how to shoot while firing. I was hoping the Gauntlet involved brawling with AI battlemechs that moved and such, but I guess that'll be another time.
-I loved how the VO was about targeting first.
-Perhaps disable the car throttle or suggest it in the tutorial.
-The head movement with the mouse may conflict with TrackIR. I'll test it at some point to confirm.
-Framerate was rather bewildering. I was averaging 40-60 when I average 90 ingame. (Note: all VH with PostAA)

I'm impressed, nice work!

Only two bugs i found so far was the mentioned missing hud after entering the firebrand. Aborting the changing animation seems to fix it.
The other one: Both the markers for gauntlet I and running cored seem to be starting running cored.

I had Gauntlet start the first time I went over to it but that was the one I went to first.

looks good, however I did notice a few minor problems

1) in the tutorial when it asks you to press [esc] you see a totally different options screen to normal, not exactly a problem but it could be a bit jarring when a new player presses esc and sees something totally different to what they expected.

2) on my standard UK layout keyboard I tried pressing \ for alpha strike (bottom left of the keyboard between shift, caps lock, a, z, and start), and it did not work, to get it to work I had to remap the key despite the fact it was showing as the correct key in settings, not a problem for me but for a new player who does not know how to remap keys in MWO, even if they did find the setting they may not realize they need the super fast double click to remap, something like that could prove extremely frustrating as there seems to be no way to skip the "alpha strike" part of the tutorial.

3) in the "Running Cored" challenge I took the Firestarter and nothing attacked me, I gave up after circuit 3 I suspect that is just something that has not yet been implemented properly

4) the settings for arm lock, throttle decay ect. did not do anything in the tutorial

They get unlocked in the second part of the academy.

maybe i didn't remember the instruction, but getting out whatever academy run you were doing (ie gauntlet), I just wanted to get back to the academy and do running cored. By clicking ESC, i had to get all the way back to main menu and then go back into academy - wasn't clear if that's what's supposed to happen; i would rather just go back to the academy start screen in an easier way from one run to the other.

Also, I wasn't sure how long I was supposed to do gauntlet. I ran it 3 times in a row (so 20-something gates) but had no idea if it maxes at 3, goes to 5, or forever and gets..harder? i dunno. the 3rd run was easier than the 2nd. Was I supposed to kill all the mechs? It wasn't clear.

If the basic tutorial was interrupted at some point, i.e. after running corse (part A), but before targeting practice (part B), the tutorial will be restarted from the very beginning, including intro. VO is good, but I, personally, like much more voice and phrasing from MW3 intro (can it be legally reused if not in tutorial, but in first launch of MWO itself?). Anyway, isn't it better to have a shortcut through that to a later stage?

The script and the voiceover pacing both need work. There are some grammar errors, and in the intro cinematic bit the voiceover has a huge pacing problem that makes the sentence read incorrectly.

Also, it desperately needs to let you play with the settings. Being locked to throttle decay and arm lock, among other things, is a huge problem.
