Should it be possible to do the important things? Yes. Should it recognize an (lol) x-box controller? Yes. Should the game be able to be mapped in full detail to said controller? No.
I'm all for a game pad, but a keyboard setup just gives you better options with a full featured game.
My muscle memory can handle it.

just give them button combos. up, down, up, down, left, right, x, b, y, start = restart the mech.

the xbox controller has 16 buttons and 2 sticks, 20 if if the 8 ways of the dpad are supported, and its the most used controller for the pc.

mwo controlls are easily mapped to those since you dont need chat on it, and you will setup the weapon groups with the keyboard, not to forget that adding full support for it isnt hard with the cryengine.

only thing that doesnt work currently are the triggers, they both count as one.
deadzone and sensetivity settings will be needed for joystick users too.

Sure, why not. We've got 3rd Person confirmed as coming and Coolant Flush already in-place, add console-gamer-friendly controls and call it a hat trick. :)

I can't wait to run against people playing 3rd person mechwarrior. Pretty sure they are going to have an impossible time hitting with arms and torso no matter how it's implemented. Free elo coming with that one.

On the upside I'll finally get that screen shot of my mechs spankin paintjob.

LOL

20 buttons. i am looking for a track ball with more buttons to go along with the keyboard that i already have the other hand resting on. honestly if i had the money i would set up my own mech pod to properly lay out all of the needed controls.

i won't stop you or complain about you using an xbox controller, but don't dilude yourself into thinking that will do anything but hinder your gameplay.

ELO would become more stratified.
  • veteran keyboard players
  • new keyboard players
  • then at the bottom rungs controller users
there will be a few that break this mold undoubtedly, but unless you just want more challenge in the game i advise against using a hand held controller.

no, there will be different controll types in all the elo brackets, just cause you can aim better with your mouse doesnt mean its the same for others.

Tbh, I could care less about specific support for Xbox controllers. Now the peripherals I do hope MWO will support are ones like Occulus Rift.

PLEASE, make this happen! It would be so much easier for me, and undoubtedly many others. I just got a nice wireless connector ($25), and I really want to be able to employ my $50 peripheral. I'm a big fan of MechWarrior, but I have never been very good with joysticks. Unfortunately the other games don't seem to even detect the second control stick making it mostly pointless Posted Image

edit: Oh, and nothing about aim assist guys, but thanks for bringing that up. I don't want that implemented ever!
Ok annnd added a keyboard option for you guys. But thats not the point, Im not asking what you want to use, Im asking that there should be the ability to use console controllers!

Its called GOOGLE. USE IT.

What kind of advantage did you have in mind? :D

the kind where people pity them enough to let them stumble around the field unharmed.

There's no reason game pads in general shouldn't be supported. The two-stick approach applies way better to 'mech combat than the big flight sticks we all know and love, to be entirely honest.

I'd probably not swap myself but I think someone would be able to use these effectively. Plus, there are higher end, much nicer controllers out there.

Just a caution. It took almost a year to get analog Joystick Turn added and it's too sensitive. Barely analog at all, very jumpy. I can adjust the CFG to max sensitivity so the other axii just crawl across the screen and the Turn axis still jumps at the slightest tap. But I suppose it will get fixed one day.
