OMG WTF s going on with the forum.... my posts and edits are happening between 2 pages.

Regardless

In short

Medium Pulse are marginally better on this mech over true mediums... no cooldown, no range quirks, but beam duration and heat reduction quirks... these quirks just make medium lasers close the performance gap compared to med pulse at 1/2 the weight with more range. If it had range / cooldown quirks, then maybe.

I doubt I'll need heatsinks with 20% heat reduction quirks and 2x gauss, if I do, then 300 engine and 2 DHS in the engine would do.

I guess you can stip off the case for an extra ton, but the argument would be that you are still an effective poker if you lose a torso and survive a CT death from the damage transfer.

Say no to Gauss Rifles in the side torsos. The Mauler is not T2 with Gauss, because the King Crab does it better. Granted I have yet to play it, but it would have to be magical (like HBK-GI magical) to be more usable.

The best theorycraft Mauler that I can come up with so far is the 4 UAC5 MX90, that or the old school 2 UAC5-2 PPC asymmetric Highlander, but on the 1P instead, and without hoverjets.

Maybe a 1R with 2 AC20-2 ML with a STD325 or something, or the 2P with an AC20 and 3 LPL. Pretty much KGC builds but with ballistics and energy locations reversed and a lot less safe with Gauss.

I'd personally do some minor tweaks and get this:

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...9c1d5f9f0c0d59b

With that amount of backup weapons, I don't think 6.5 tons of ammo is really needed. I knocked it down to 5 (plenty in all my experiences) and added more heatsinks, so those 6 mediums can actually be used without melting.

I'm not what you would call a top tier player but you may do better with something like this.

Asym build with 1 gauss in the side torso, the biggest engine you can fit for faster torso twisting.

You're playing a protector that weighs 15 tons extra without the Protector quirks.
I can't bring myself to do it. :)

PPFLD META FTW. (Pin-point face-loaded damage)

Well the advantage of pulse lasers is the extra damage and if youre fairly decent, its all that damage in the same component, not just the mech.

Lights, or mechs that dart between cover, pulse lasers give you a solid advantage over lasers in those situations, and in competitive play most players arent going to face tank you. 6 more damage and all of it going where you want even when they twist and play corners, is important.

You could use the 6 tons in other ways, but none of that offers you much benefit. More heatsink dont really matter because you run cool enough anyways, and you shouldnt be facetanking either. Cornering manages heat on its own. You simply cant and shouldnt be, in a position to overheat unless charged (which means they die to your focus firing teammates).

You want the best alpha you can have, period, and as a secondary consideration, you want to be able to fire it all at least 3 times for over 150 damage and all that damage to go where you want it to go.

In competitive play, you have just a second or two of exposure, then youre back in cover or behind a friendly. You want to apply as much damage as efficiently as possible.

Not much different from the Highlander with the 3 Large and the Gauss, except no Jump jets.

EDIT however I like your initial setup the best.

You know, the more I think about it, the more I wonder just what, precisely, this thing does insofar as dual ballistics, or even single ballistics, that the KGC doesn't. Even the single-goose/3xiERLL shield-side model can be done on the Krab, with a safer arm-mounted goose and super-high trip iERLL. Krab does it at 0.1kph slower than the Mauler at the ful STD360 engine; go with a STD350 and you lose ~2kph in exchange for a ton and a half of extra gear over the exact same shield-side Mauler (1x Goose w/4t, 3x iERLL, 4x external DHS), with 100-tonner armor/structure, no shaved legs and the Krab's superior hardpoint placement.

I wonder if the Mauler might best be done a different way, instead.

Go that route and you have a 1-2 triple iERLL punch that can measure up reasonably well to most of the nastiest Clan beamspam salvos. Obviously your heat is problematic, but you also have no ammo concerns at all and can peek with a fistful of screw-you-buddy with either arm as your current position requires. Moves as fast as a Mauler can go, and shaves less armor than the original double-Goose model does. Or, well, shaves it from a different place, I suppose.

Perhaps something worth considering?

Hrmm is that Mauler better than the Quirked Stalker 4N tho? More range. But id say not nearly as good hitboxes and mounts.

A 320 will let you carry another heat sink for 1 kph slower.

-20% heat generation as opposed to the Stalker's -15%, -12.5% laser burntime on the Mauler as opposed to the 5% range and 15% cooldown on the Stalker. Debatable, I'd call it, though it tends to favor the Stalker. On the other hand, the Mauler has more intuitive weapons grouping and doesn't have to carry two of its lasers in lovehandle mounts. Plus lateral movement on the Mauler's arm lasers.

I'd say the Stalker probably pulls out ahead in the end, but the Mauler's close enough, and offers enough niche advantages of its own, to not be a total write-off as a laser spammist. I don't know if the same can be said comparing it to the Krab, though.

If it had ECM that would be a great build. Put on derp and advanced zoom when mastered, have a blast. I think a Stalker would still do it better simply because of the mounts tho, but LL instead of ERLL lacks some long range punch.

Gauss in the torso means when youre aiming past someone when you lead them, that the slugs will be closer together than arm mounted ones. I think thats really the Maulers schtick. Everything else is done better by something else.

And thats certainly not a reason to use it over a whale or crab.

Its not terrible, but it doesnt really put anything new on the table. Youve got some options for decent builds, but if youre going to go assault, Whales, Crabs and Wubshees are still a better bet. If it offered something else, like ECM, or great mounts, better speed, it could stand out. Its got good options.

I'm with Saxie here. The OP's build is better than most of the advice being given (I see WMQ's point about gauss, but dakka has its issues too)

I might drop the engine to a 295. You get a full ton for...something. The 300 just isn't a great upgrade over the 295 if you're not using the heat sink slot.

So how high/low are those torso ballistics?

Moar meta worthy?
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...c0e53a361f8da73

I guess options include;
Dropping some armor for an extra 1/2 ton
Dropping the rear torso armor down to 4 if the angles to hit the back armor from the front are manageable
To case or not to case? That is the question for side torso mounted gauss mechs.

Also medium laser comparrison on this variant.

Mech Bonuses
Laser Duration 12.5%
Fast Fire 5% + 12% Cooldown Module = 17.5% faster reload

Medium Pulse
Weight 2 tons
Damage 6
Reload 2.47
Beam Duration 0.52
Range 220
DPS x6 = 12.04

Medium Laser
Weight 1 ton
Damage 5
Reload 2.47
Beam Duration 0.78
Range 270
DPS x6 = 9.18

Can't really say I am willing to pay 6 extra tons to do 3 more damage 260ms faster at 50m shorter range by using medium pulse.

I think this is the one situation where CASE is a good idea. Otherwise a rifle popping (likely) has way too high a chance to blow into your CT. 60 rounds should be enough too.
