I've had someone try to help me figure this out on my nvidia system before.
Does this affect 3D settings, or just video playback? I was under the impression that the video color settings didn't apply to 3D (but then again, I haven't taken PC gaming all that seriously in many years).

I think it's just video playback. I always have it turned on, gets rid of grey bars in vlc.

Adjust desktop Color Settings
Dinamic range

and calibrate your screen, I use this website:

Better yet, get yourself a high-quality monitor and a color calibrator.
