On load, the game uses the default Windows audio device for VoIP capture and playback, instead of the device selected in the settings. The settings still reports the previously selected device as being the active one, but the game uses the default Windows audio device until you re-select device and save the setting again. However, the new device will only be used during that session, and reloading the client will cause the game to use the default Windows audio device again.

In other words, I need to re-select the VoIP playback device every time I load the client!

In your windows settings itself, how is your sound setup? Does it have it set to default (which may be the specific device) or the specific device itself?

Also, have you tried it with Admin priv set with the MWO shortcut?

That bug has been there since VoIP was rehashed and "fixed"(?). My default audio out is my speaker system, but I have VoIP set to use my headphones while game audio runs through the speakers. Like the OP I have to reset it every time I load the client. It says my headphones are the VoIP output device, but it uses the speakers until I fix it.

Been doing it for months. People have been complaining about it for months. Nothing has been done about it for months. Probably because it is not a game breaker, just an annoyance.

Like I described. I have a stereo that is connected to the on board Realtek sound card via TOS link, which is set as the default windows playback device. I also have a USB headset, with the microphone set as the default windows recording device. In TeamSpeak, I have the headphones of the USB headset set as the playback device. I do this, because voices are easier to hear during dakka-dakka or explosions.

For VoIP in MWO, I have the headphones of the USB headset set as the playback device for VoIP. The configuration file has that device saved as the playback device, and it is the listed device for VoIP playback in the settings menu of MWO. However, MWO always uses the default Windows playback device (i.e., the stereo) when the client loads. In order to have it use the headphones again, I need to go to the settings and re-select the headphones (even though they are already selected) and click 'Save'.

Occasionally, either early in the morning or late at night, I will need to play everything through the headphones, as not to disturb sleeping persons. When that happens, I change the default Windows playback device to the headphones. If I start MWO with the headphones as the default Windows playback device, VoIP plays through the headphones without needing to re-select them in the VoIP audio settings. It is only when the VoIP playback device is not the default Windows playback device that I need to re-select the VoIP playback device in MWO for the client to use that device, otherwise MWO uses the Windows playback device.

I have not tried running under admin, because that should not be necessary and will not solve the issue. Running as admin might help if MWO could not playback via the headphones at all, due to possible permissions issues with the device. But that's not the case. MWO can and will use the headphones, you just have to either set them as the default device in Windows or re-select them as the VoIP playback device every time you load the client. The symptoms suggest that the client does not read the VoIP audio playback device (and probably the input device as well) from the configuration when it initializes the VoIP system, and instead just uses the default Windows device.

I posted about it a while ago, and after the previous patch as well. I've decided to post this every patch until fixed. Squeaky wheel gets the oil.
