I've read that recent dev-post about the 3rd-programs they're investigating some players on, and I just have to ask about what they specifically want. What exact programs are Pgi trying to crackdown on? Macros or Aim-bots?

All I've ever used are macros. Just for Rapid AC fire builds on my Jagermech. But has the community whined about it enough that macros are gonna get the blame. I'm just concerned about my dakka. As I've always been. I'd like to know if I can still use FireCtrl. If No then I won't. I'll cry though. And adapt... Cause annnnooother favourite build of mine would be obsolete again.

If MACROS are considered cheats now... then fine. I just want clarification PGI.

Thank you.

Macros are fine.

Some players will whine about it, but they're not against the rules. They're generally pointless, Dakka-Dakka being objectively worse than alpha, but the fun factor is better.

Only macro that will potentially get you in trouble is AFK automation. Anything that helps you save from RSI/ wearing out mouse buttons/keyboard / manage weapon groups etc is afaik fine.

Yeah and Kevin Anchor never made and freely distrbuted and trolled MWO for weeks with an AFK farm script that actually had the ability to cap bases.
It actually rarely won games. IIRC it would even fire weapons at one point.
It actually clicked launch into the games and restared the client and all sorts, people left it run over night and woke up with millions of cbills.

He was also the first person I know to get perma banned.

If you can only use a certain build by means of 3rd party software... you are cheating

... lol, you need a macro to make a build viable? What build is obsoleted by the removal of a macro?

It's always better to fire all of your weapons together in this game - you concentrate all your damage into one carefully aimed shot and ensure that everything goes to the component you want it to. It also means time to torso twist between shots or back into cover - less face time is better.

People use macros more for fun than they do to make them better in any way. This is why Pgi says its OK.

I personally like to program and this let's me do two this I like at the same time.

But how was it implemented? Injected into the code like a hack or independent entirely?

That's what I'm saying. A macro doesn't interface with the game directly; it's actions are generic, and as such you couldn't do a "legal" afkfarmer with it. A hack is a different story

ahk = autohotkey

That's like the most used macro program going. It does pixel detection> you take PNG screens from in game and feed those to the script and so on.

The newest stuff I see coming is image recognition software using the input from a second monitor that then reacts to "visual ques" and then sends commands back out as USB input like mouse or keyboard. It takes 2 very good computers not just one. The really lazy with not take the time to add random variable or use easy to get scripts that the "police" can easily see. An individual will need some basic script writing ability for the actions and then they will need to be able to recognize, acquire, declare and manipulate visual patterns. So now you have two skill sets to work with instead of object programming.

The software for this is everywhere and is only getting more prevalent. I have used it in reading pure scans of pages and then formatting them into readable electronic formats with web formatting. This is how police and other "agencies" can read and flag items of interest with public surveillance cameras. google image can find search all your pictures and find the face of a certain person in every picture and make a list.

Like everything else in this game, the only way to really gain an edge with this type of thing is to already be better than most before you ever touch it.

Note I have degrees in fine arts and graphic design, and yes I have had multiple offers for high detail metal plate engraving for counterfeiting and "classy non-traditional" pornography that I have turned down. The knowledge itself does not lead to certain behaviors.
