Something that was always kinda interesting that never really got translated from fluff to the board game was the difference of a single weapon class and its manufacturers.
Taken from Sarna.net:

Different manufacturers and models of autocannons have different calibers (25mm-203mm) and rates of fire. Due to this, autocannons are grouped into generic "classes" of autocannons with common damage ratings, with Autocannon/20s doing massive damage while having very short range.
An example of the rating system: the Crusher Super Heavy Cannon is a 150mm weapon firing ten shells per "round" while the Chemjet Gun is a 185mm weapon firing much slower (possibly 1 shell), and causing higher damage per shell. Despite their differences, both are classified as Autocannon/20s due to their damage output.

This might kind of con-volute the game and making fixing whatever problems with the metagame more difficult. I do think it would an interesting flavor to add though, especially if there will be house specific/limited mechs (as well as weapons if this were to be added). It would also give certain weapon classes a little more versatility (kinda like the differences between certain weapons from Team Fortress 2 each have something unique about them).

I cast my vote to have the Clan Heavy Lasers!!! Twice the damage but also twice the heat. But they sure pack a punch!

Great idea OP, thought about that too:

As a side note, I have a suggestion. I had this idea for a long time now, about different kinds of ACs for the same class. You know, how they always write in TT rulebooks, "AC/X is not a type, it's a class; ACs within a class differ by calibre, RoF, per-shell damage etc". So, I was thinking about making it so that there would be different types of ACs in the game: say Imperial Automatic ones are high RoF, low per-shell damage plinkers, Yefter's Weapons ones have higher-calibre, they are single shot low-RoF high per-shell damage cannons and those, which are made by Canopus Industries are using per-clip fire with fixed burst. Same DPS, same damage per ammo ton, different flavour. Such diversity could be made available for each of AC classes, making it easier to select what best suits your style of play.

That's not what OP is talking about, Heavy lasers is a different type of weapon. Different ACx models within the same category as still ACx but they could vary in some way, depending on the manufacturer.

IIRC, the DEVs have said that they aren't going to do this. Too much work envolved when that work can be dedicated to other things. So basically, a AC20 is a AC20, no matter who the manufacturer is.

My thoughts exactly. It might be cool to have slightly different variants of each weapon, but in the end, it's a lot of work compared to the difference it makes.
