You need 3 varients of a chassis, unlock all basics on each one to unlock elite skills. Once that is done then you need to unlock the elite skills on three seperate chassis in a weight class to unlock master slot.

Long ago I unlocked Jenners, hunchbacks, catapults and atlas to mastery lvl. They were the only mechs in game at the time. By fully unlocking one chassis of each wieght class all I have to do to master a released mech is basics on 3 variants to unlock elite and then master whichever of the 3 I want pilot regularly and ignore the other two. Clan mechs are easier to unlock imho. Swapping pods means you can master 3 variants without ever changing the loadout. Takes time to unequip then move to next chassis but for some mechs i felt it was worth it.

I personally choose two or three mechs a day and make sure I get a first victory bonus off of them before I hit up my fun mechs. Double exp on that win makes unlocking otherwise boring mechs much quicker than straight grinding them out even if it takes me a week or two at a match a day instead a day of two of grinding.

As far as earning exp goes the only way to do it is to play, the better you play the better the rewards. Having premium time and playing a champion or hero mech speeds the process for that individual mech up considerably. That costs real cash though.

Big gains can also be made with a UAV deployed, this costs 40k cbills a pop and milage will vary if you are new to the game as it can be deployed with no enemy's around to effect. A good UAV position can give you scouting, counter ecm, and spotting assists. They can be shot down easy however and can burn cbills up for little to no gain.

Scouting, flanking and spotting bonuses add up well as can narc beacon and tag damage if your team fires on your locked target with LRMs. Best to carry your own missles as well as BAP equipment to counter ecm for more exp. Stay close to other mechs and receive protection bonuses as well when combat has been initiated.

The big exp comes from damage, kills, damage most dealt deaths and solo kills (which also often give you a brawling bonus) and destroying components on enemy mechs. Hitting any enemy once gives you an assist bonus should it be destroyed later.

Play to the best of your ability, focus targets weak spots to destroy components, team up with a Lance or teammate and shoot the same targets and above all WIN, winning pays much more exp than dieing.

Please note that this is not necessarily the way to go. Some people master and keep all the mechs. I myself Master all mechs because completing the Elite skills doubles the Basic bonusses, making a world of difference in how a mech might operate. I see the path to Mastery as the final shake-down of a mech. Only at the end of that period do I make a decision to keep a mech, sell it, or maybe keep it in purgatory because I could see nice things for it in the future.

For the rest, Rhavin's post is pretty much gold. :)

Aye, it's not the way to go for most people, but I have met several players that did not realize that was how it works. I generally despise lrm heavy mechs so on some chassis that feature an abundance of missle points I open basics and move on, I never sell a mech though and tend to elite everything over time with first wins as I described above.

I forgot to mention flanking and hit and run bonuses, they really add up when you are in a fast light mech. Takes some skill but you can sneak up with ECM, call a target, narc the mech, then wait to tag mark a mech till you see team missles icon to hit for the exp gain, alpha strike while the missles are landing and run away. By waiting for the missles to land you hide your damage, sometimes allowing you to get away Scott free and not giving away your location. Remember that tag is visible, so hold off on using it till you see missle incoming icon before fireing it off. This works real well if you use VOIP, and often gains you spotting assists as well. When executed properly you get narc bonuses, spotting bonus, narc and tag bonuses, flanking bonus and hit and run bonus. It's beautiful screen spam.

The tag laser has so many exp bonuses that if you know how and when to use it in concert with one other lrm boating teammate you can rack up points and never fire a shot.
