Oh how I wish as I was selling Timbers as I leveled them I had hurried to get the third, or kept one of the other two...

I wish I knew
I am scared to take my TWs’ out for fear of the nerf bat
I been leveling my Ice Ferrets’ which are pretty fun but my goal is just to play until I get the daily XP bonus
I can zip around the battle field in the Ice Ferret which is pretty fun until I get pounded to never never land
I also bought an executioner which is a nightmarishly bad slow Mech

There's no real way of avoiding this reality.

...No seriously, nobody will shoot at you with all the SCRs/TBRs/DWFs running around leaving you free to dakka people's faces off.

I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of IS mechs, although mostly ECM cataphract and griffin. Some unusual reoccurring mechs last night included wolverine quarantine and bj-1x; not sure why but I seemed to see one a match.
Edit: I noted those steaks because I was running a wolverine and a blackjack most of my games.

LRM Hunchback-4J
SRM Hunchback-4SP
Laser Hunchback-4P
once LRM20 + 3ML Shadow Cat
What has not worked that I tried:
Centurions
one Ice Ferret I own
Griffins
Need to redo my Nova.
I am sticking to Mediums, Lights don't score enough for me and the other 2 weights are clogged.
Seeing lots of LRM boats.

Depends on your weapon preference, build and MASC use.

Correct answer.
My Cheetah failed to get 400 points, so I built a DakkaWhale (purposely not Dual Gauss) to farm damage.
It has not yet failed to get 400 points. What a nice easy button.
Although I did discover something disturbing...I hadn't used this variant in Months...and it had over 10 points of rear armour *gasp*
I was horrified.

And I've only played four matches so far...
How I play it is basically Large laser for long reaches. Med lasers for lights or moving targets that are in/out of cover and can't land a clear shot on. UAC/5's and everything else when you want to blow the brains out of things.
I have coolshots to help. I don't use them often at all.
Only 18 armor (was 10) on arms because it's rare they get removed. They do fall off sometimes, but if they do, it's not that big of a loss. usually you lose a torso before an arm anyways, so..
