I think it's certain Mechs like the Hero Mechs or some other special versions within a group of the same Mech.

If you are just using the trial mechs you can't level them or use one as one of the 3 you need. If you go purchase the Trial mech then you could use the XP earned on it. (I think).

I think that is what someone was getting at.
A champion version of a mech does not count as a new variant.

Trial 'Mechs do not count -- you must own the 'Mech.
Champion ( C ) 'Mechs do not count as their own variant -- they count as the original variant.
Other special 'Mechs like (F), (S), (I), etc also only count as the original variant and not their own.

People already explained it, so let me consolidate it
To master a chassis you need three variants of that chassis
We'll use the Centurion as an example.
Currently, these are the variants that exist in game:
CN9-A
CN9-A(C) (Champion)
CN9-D
CN9-AL
CN9-YLW (Hero)
CN9-AH
CN9-AH(L) (Loyalty special edition)
The special designation ones like the CN9-AH(L), and CN9-A(C) are identical to their non-designation versions (CN9-AH, and CN9-A). They actually share the same tree, and don't show up as their own variants.
The special designation is not a unique variant. It's a regular variant with a bonus. So the CN9-A, and the CN9-A(C) are identical in every respect, except for the fact that the (C) gives you 30% extra experience.
TL;DR:
You need 3 VARIANTS. Not three mechs. That's why special designation versions don't count if your three choices include their regular version [A selection of CN9-A, CN9-A(C), and CN9-D is in fact only 2 variants (A, and D).]

So you cannot utilize a (C) chassis + the standard chassis as a part of your 3 mech set to unlock elites.
Any other mech will do. There are no chassis that simply don't count towards the 3 mech system as long as those said mechs are "unique" versions of the chassis.

yes, this is what they were talking about most likely.. Any mech with the (c) is the same as it's none (c) so that means it won't count.
You also need to own the mech, to unlock the XP slots.. so if you used a trial, you need to buy that same mech with c-bills or MC, and then it will unlock allowing you to spend your XP on the mech.

The one I should buy is either a 2B, 3C or 3M?

Yep, if you buy that variant you can apply the XP you earned from running trial mechs. There are no mechs that cannot be used for mastery. I think the OP was probably confused by statements about trial mechs, because the XP earned can't be applied until you buy that variant, and until it is applied to efficiencies it doesn't count for mastery.
