Well, running old tech (3025 era) for this tournament, which means no XL, no ER, no UAC, no Pulse, and no DHS, I think I did okay. Despite how people keep saying that old tech makes you worthless, I tended to be one of the top scorers in my group. The biggest frustration was the getting the map you needed, since I had to grind for 3 days to get Canyon.

These were the 'Mechs I mainly used.

STK-3F - PPC, LL, 4 x ML
AWS-8Q - 2 x PPC, 4 ML
CTF-4X - 3 x AC/5, 2 ML

My HBK-4G w AC/20 and 2 x SL got the HPG score, on one of the 2 times I saw that map.

Stop - Tier is based on Matchscore - Matchscore is based on damage -

Damage is bad because - its random (deal critical hit - cause ammunition explosion - congrats you get a MS boost) - damage is bad because killing a target with a clean head shot is worser for MS rather than reducing the enemy Mech in a tiny bits. I don't say i can achieve that on a usual basis but 200dmg should be the absolute maximum to kill any Mech - (good positioning - 4sec and a death Gargoyle - 80dmg)

next problem - a good team will deal equal amount of damage - in combination with the limited number of available MS in the enemy pool and taking the 200dmg as an example - those 12 men team with superb synchron focus fire - will deal low damage = low MS

Good stuff. I like players like you who are playing for a challenge and fun and not 'must get the killz in my leet meta madcatz!'

Of course. I never did understand those crying and ranting about the events. (Ok i can understand it about the last one and it is justified)
But its a game, I play games to have fun - i don't play games because I'm forced to do.

Yeah, it started getting boring in the poptart days, so this is how I added variety to make the game fun again.

What’s old Tech?

I had to get out my best Mech to even come close to the match score I needed

My TW streak wolf

I then did 14 hours straight and on my 4th drop on Crimson Strait they computer gave me the match score I needed to finish the solo part of the event

The thing I learned was no matter what Mech I was in I put out about the same damage plus or minus

Every once in a while I would have a super match and get 4 kills and a super high match score

Like maybe 1 in 20 I would get this high score

Old tech is what on table top was once classified as level 1 tech based on rules set. Level 1 rules were the most basic. If it has Pulse, Ultra, LB-X, ER, XL, or Gauss in its name it is level 2 tech. Also included in level 2 tech is AMS, any advanced electronic warfare systems and targeting devices (BAP, GECM, TAG, and Artemis), Command Consoles, Ferro Fiberous, Endo-Steel, CASE, and Double Heat Sinks. All Clan tech that does not have standard in its name (engines, armor, heat sinks, and internal structure) is also level 2 tech.

Level 1 tech is Battletech at its most basic, and possibly its most balanced form.

I doubt either of those mechs is what the OP is referring to (tier 1 tech). The Cicada has ECM and XL, so that's out right away. I'm sure the TDR has DHS also, so that's not "old tech" either...

3050 IS 'Mechs weren't widely deployed to face the Clan invasion, so Tier 1 tech 'Mechs were what most Inner Sphere Houses had to fight with, so that's the feel I've also been going for as a Battletech fan.

I also wanted to show that Tier 1 tech 'Mechs have some viability so PGI doesn't forget to give them some love despite all the Meta madness with Clan 'Mechs.

It is pre-Clan tech and that is "old" if not "ancient" in this game. ;)
