Apparently it was something of an oversight.

IS Mechs were given weapon quirks to compete with stronger Clan Mechs.

MWO's lead designer doesn't like weapon quirks because it makes weapons harder to balance from their base values.

So, for the rebalance, they planned to simply remove all the weapon quirks and balance IS Mechs against other IS Mechs - and Clans vs Clans. They didn't actually look into Clan v IS balancing at all. Hopefully with the ridiculous level of feedback (aka rage) this generated, they'll take this into account before giving us another build to test.

Well thanks for elaborating and holding a back and forth with me. I love how willing you are to converse with a noobie. Thank you so much!

this is not a word.

Newbie - a player who is new to the game and asks basic questions while trying to learn, we all start as newbies per definition.
Noob - a player who is still playing like a newbie after some time, showing no signs of learning. used as derogative.

:-D

Additionally, I find it dispiriting that IS mechs are weaker, I find their asthetics superior to my tastes for whatever that's worth.

They are weaker, that is by design at this point in the timeline.

We have 30 some years of Lore and TT rules that do have a place within MWO, for a lot of us it is that Lore and those 30 some years playing TT that brought us here.

IF the timeline is moved forward, as I think it eventually should be, IS does start to produce weapon systems that are close to being on par with Clan tech. Things really start to get interesting for IS in the next 4 to 6 years....

I actually had no idea about that! That's pretty cool, where should/could I start learning this lore?

The Blood of Kerensky trilogy of novels takes place during the time period that MWO currently inhabits if you're into books and things.

Its not quite true that clan mechs are clearly superior to IS mechs. There are quite a few IS mechs that can give the clanners a run for their money and even though the recent public test balance was a disgrace, PGI clearly stated that they dont want owning clan mechs over IS mechs to become an arms race and people just piloting IS till they can get in to a superior clan machine.

That being said, as many have stated the Timberwolf clan heavy mech is a great balance of speed, firepower and armor and you really cant go wrong with it. And there is even a hero Timber coming soon if i remember right. But even so, i own most of the "better" clan mechs and i still enjoy piloting some IS mechs just as much or even more (my Misery most of all).

Also dont forget there are hero mech sales quite often so if you are in no rush and arent made of money than waiting for one of those is a good idea as well. And if you are thinking of getting premium time but arent in a rush, the marauder pack is a fantastic deal till the end of the month, since for 20 bucks you get 3 75 ton mechs, 6,5mil cbills, several millions worth of modules AND 1 month of premium. Nothing really beats that deal at the moment, but the down side is that you would have to wait for a couple months to get all those goodies. :)

As for battletech lore, if you are a book reader i recommend all the Michael Stackpole Battletech books. Here is a list of Battletech lore books: https://en.wikipedia...ttleTech_novels (just avoid the one with bird aliens :P)

Here is the best advice you are going to get;

Buy 1 months Premium time when you KNOW you are going to be able to play the snot out of the game AND you have settled in on a good chasis. There is ZERO sense in buying premium time and spending it in Trial mechs.

Why buy more? In a month you will reach "make or break" and can decide if it's worth putting more money into the game.

Don't buy a mech until you've played the trial mechs in the Mechwarrior Academy and discovered the ones you like the best to run. Otherwise you could just spend your money poorly because you just didn't know what works for you. I say the Academy simply because there is a big sampling of different mechs in it for you to try. After that...test out some trial mechs.

Once you know you have a c-bill grinding machine....then maybe consider buying a PROVEN mech with a c-bill bonus.

That trilogy, the Aidan Pryde Trilogy and the Grey Death Trilogy are probably the books I recommend reading most.

Probably in this order:

1. Grey Death
2. Blood of Kerensky
3. Aidan Pryde

There are also the Technical Readout Manuals, but Sarna does a nice free job for that.

I ended up dropping with you for at least two matches last night Clowntown at random. One big win on our part and one close loss. Hope to do so again soon!

Thank you TLB, that's the route I am taking. The slow one.

As for you lore junkies, how are the books? Have you read them? Can you recommend the best ones? How did you enjoy them?

I like reading science fiction so this is right up my alley.

I suppose that makes learning lore more difficult than the average game. Unfortunate but I'll have a look

I've read most of the books that take place around this 'time period'. They're solid. It's not the Hyperion Cantos, but for YA fiction they're definitely fun.

The best one is definitely the one starring Vlad Ward - Malicious Intent. Though, I'd imagine it wouldn't make much sense when read on its own.

I'd imagine you can find them on e-bay or amazon. And also in digital format for ... "various prices," if you're so inclined.

Yeah, I'm going to do my best to get them found/read what have you. Any books specifically regarding House Liao?

I ask because I'd like to know what factions use specific mechs, etc!

You can narrow down by faction with this section of Sarna.

I sent you a PM by the way regarding the books.

I'm sorry to say I'm not too familiar with Liao. The faction was pretty much reduced to Generic Bad Guy With Psychotic Ruler land by the Clan Invasion era. Someone who's read more of the earlier timeline books may be able to point you in the right direction there.
