Got cbills burning a hole in pocket (30 mil).

I could buy more Raven 3Ls, since I only have six, but I think my unit commander would have me committed :)

So, choices I'm looking at are

1) Dire

2) Timberwolf

3) Zeus

I already have Stalkers and enjoy them. But I've heard good things about these 3 and am wondering which you would recommend. I think what I am looking for is versatility in builds, arm hardpoins preferred, high alpha pinpoint (gauss/ppc)

Dire and Timber are both currently (arguably) the best mechs in their respective classes.

It depends on what you want to be doing and how you want to be playing. Both the Timber and the Zeus are quite mobile (Timber is faster and has JJ of course) and will be putting out similar damage. They can be played very effectively as strikers, moving quickly into the fight and putting out a lot of hurt. The Timber especially is fast and agile enough that escape from an unfavorable situation is relatively easy as well. Their hitboxes also make them deceptively tanky if you can twist well.

The Dire Wolf, on the other hand, is the last word in straight-up damage. Nothing in the game can lay down the kind of fire a Dire can while still having enough armor to weather the return fire (to a degree). They're quite slow, but you should be able to keep up with other assaults without a problem. Once you're in the fight, though, escape is not an option so wait to commit until your team is ready to push. They might be the meanest kid on the playground, but Dires still go down like a sack of bricks to concentrated fire if left unsupported.

As far as versatility, the Timber can do basically anything but electronic warfare and do it well. You can boat the hell out of ERMLs/MPLs and have great pinpoint alpha, or diversify and throw in LRMs, Streaks or ballistics. The Dire also has very very mean alpha with dual gauss + lasers or UAC/5 boats that just spit out DPS like nobody's business. They are mush less flexible, though: a Dire is amazing at direct fire and not much else.

Thanks Raging. I'll go with the Timber due to mobility and versatility.

One of my weaknesses in Stalkers is that I often push into bad positions, so it sounds like the Dire would just be worse for me right now.

The Dire Wolf with its fixed 300 engine maxes out at 53.5KPH, that is the absolute fastest any Dire Wolf can move, it has immense firepower when it gets there but is almost helpless if another Mech manages to get close.
a Direwolf working with its team is great but alone it is not good

Ugh, which of the 3 Timbers? Prime, D, A, C or S?

I'm at 39 mil, so can get 2 now and the 3rd after leveling the first two.

Each CT has it's own hardpoint. So I'd say that's your main choice, since you're not buying a pack version (where the Prime has a 30% C-Bills bonus). I think an energy hardpoint CT will do you good for now, Honestly, with 30 mil, you can outfit it however you want, and build virtually any template, so long as ECM is not part of it. You'll also be going at near medium mech speeds (89.1 Kph with speed tweak). After a few good matches, you should be able to buy a second one.

To be specific, it's the only pod (CT) on a timby, that will get you ONE JJ. The STs have 2 JJs each.

Fen are you looking for mechs to use in open pug games or are you trying to build up a CW deck?

Just for PUG drops. I normally run a Raven 3L and need to branch out more. My only heavies/assaults areHellbringers, Jaegers and Stalkers.

I already have a Hellbringer/Stormcrow dropdeck for CW.

If you mainly Solo you may want a Warhawk instead of a Dire. 75KPH + 32 tons freespace. Dual Gauss, Gauss Vomit, or Wubs work well.

Warhawks have a great variety of builds and the alphas can reach to 100. Down side is the glass cannon hitboxes. They are best at range but if you brawl you NEED to use speed and mobility to avoid fire.
Things like this are possible...but how practical depends on skill/style.

Timby is the current best Heavy.

Ive never been intimidated by a Zeus. They can take a beating vs unfocused fire but dont really dish too much out.

For PUGging, nothing beat the TBR, really. The Dire is evil but it's feast or famine PUGging. The Zeus is really, thoroughly ok.
