These are great, surprised these don't have more views. thank you for sharing. Lots to watch now.

Thank you. The views are low because most of them are new. I update them when they change stuff and they've changed a lot of the UI lately. In fact there will be more new one because of the last patch.

From someone who regularly ruins things for their team since May this year, I support everyone saying not to worry about it. I mean, hell, I bought Urbanmechs last night and I'm only just in the process of levelling them

Don't worry about ruining things for your team. You can only learn by doing. I had 5 kills in my first 100 games. Now I'm on a high level competitive team. Get in, get rekt, get better!

Welcome to MWO. Feel free to ask any questions you have.

Good sound advice. Couldn't have said it better myself :)

The main point of this game is learn but have fun. I am still learning and improving ( I can not get any worse). I am considered a Tier 5 player.

Good luck to you and Happy Hunting.

Well I did my first match. Felt about like this.

I tried the Banshee, got surrounded and killed at the end, but I did some damage. I lost track of my team and ended up alone. It was fun though!

I have been playing for half a year now. You will run into some people who will complain about your skills on VOIP. Learn how to mute those characters and listen to those who are constructive. Only problem the muted characters will not stay muted in the next match if you come across them.

I started playing light mechs and locust for some reason after reading the locust thread on the strategy section. You want to learn how to play fast and hard. That would be one way. Locust pilots are a whole different breed of player.

I just wanted to thank you for pointing me to that thread. I liked the spider but I didn't enjoy the looks of it, so I went ahead and bought a Locust 1E. I am in love with fast paced playstyle, really gets your heart going.

It had the added benefit of being nice and cheap, I was able to throw it together with about 7 million c-bills.

First match was a success, it is a lot of fun to be the annoying little fly.

Splurged a bit and got premium time and a paint job for it as well.

Thanks for all the advice and encouraging me to just dive in. Consider me hooked!

Edit: Does picking a faction do anything if you are not playing the Community Warfare mode?

For someone who just started that is a nasty score. No need to worry about hampering your team.

And no, factions only matter within CW.

Yeah, I was going to warn that Locusts are generally considered the Hard Mode, but then I saw that match score ... never mind. They're also generally considered a mech befitting of Real Men.

Yeah, outside Community Warfare your faction choice has no effect. Outside that, all it will do is display the unit logo next to your name, both on the forum and in-game. You said you're an old BT fan, so if you have a favourite faction you can simply fly their colours although there's no in-game effect.

Ok, whose alt are you? Krivvan, is that you? ;) Seriously, I'm a very good Locust pilot and I'd be pleased with that game at any tier. You're gonna be fine. A serious caveat, though: You can get away with a lot in a LCT at lower tiers that better players will punish you for immediately and completely at higher tiers. Lights are considered OP by mediocre and bad players, but not by good players.

That said, what was the build? 6SPL and 5ML are the "standards" on that mech. Curious which style you favor.

Welcome aboard. Lots of good info here. This IS a daunting game. I was absolutely terrible at it when I started, as the learning curve is very steep. But I stuck with it. You'll slowly learn, and if you stick with it you will reap the rewards. It took me six months to scratch my (meaningless) KDR above 1.0 Now, I'm a competent pilot. I usually do more damage than average and rarely am a hindrance to my team. If you haven't already, jump in a match and see what happens. As some other folks have said, you're only going to learn by doing.

Edit: With that performance in your Locust, even as an OUTLIER, you're going to be okay I think. I didn't see that sort of damage dealt for a long, long time after I started. Well done.

I'm already noticing that. That match people just sat there and let me peck at their backs. Still fun even against people who shoot back, a nice challenge.

Yeah, my best LCT game was during an episode of GOT and I had two Jenners hide from me....

I never play multiplayer games because I'm really not that awesome at video games and playing against other humans that are actually smart is daunting, as you said I'd rather play a single player campaign. However, this is a game I tried out, and really got into. I'm not competitive by any means, but I can play decently enough and have some great games. Don't worry about how other players will react to you. You have to start somewhere and most people here are pretty friendly. Start by picking a mech similar to you in the field and shadowing it. Shoot what it shoots, or what is shooting at it. Y is team chat. Use it.

So I've been enjoying my locust, this about describes the feeling when I manage to get a good spot on the enemies flank.

HOWEVER! As I rank up, I am noticing this is working less and less. People are wising up, and I seem to be being hunted relentlessly by enemy lights who actually protect their fat friends now.

I've been trying to do what most of the Locust guides I can find tell me. Stick to the flank, never poke out in the same place twice, when in doubt flee to the friendlies.

I know I am not supposed to take on other lights in a stand up fight, but sometimes I get pegged before I can even flee due to the low armor of the mech. Are there any tricks to escaping enemy lights that anyone can share?

Honestly, there's nothing other than run like hell, and try to wiggle a bit when you run.

Like small turns or wider ones. I do try and do smaller turns.

Edit: And apparently I'm out of posts for the day (sigh), so if I don't reply right away that is why. Anyone know when that restriction is lifted?

Depends on what's chasing you.

For example, if you know the chaser is much slower than you, then big irregular, and very random turns will help. Especially fi they are mounting ballistics.

If they are very fast, and close to your speed (130+ kph), you'll want shallower turns. Here's why:

When you are wiggling, you cross less forward distance than when running in a straight line. So a target has more time tracking you, and if they are fast enough, they can actually close distance. You'll make the most clearance when running in a straight light, but if you run in a straight line, I will take your leg from under you 100% of the time, or even kill you 100% of the time. Since all I have to do is aim my shot, and know that it will hit you reliably.

I'll have less time on target, but better accuracy. If you wiggle, I'll have more time on target, but worse accuracy. The choice is yours here, and does depend on what's chasing you, and their weapons.

Welcome to MWO OP.

I was once like you. Now i have 4000++ matches on record. Don't worry about too many things for now, just remember to have fun.

Do try the new tutorial PGI launched, it's quite good.
