I had the first, and I rented the second one.

I enjoyed them as games you could sit down and play with a friend in splitscreen, but I was 8 years old back then, of course. If I played them now, I probably wouldn't like them.

8 years old?

That makes you quite a big younger then your average Mech fan. (I'm assuming)
Then I would say Mechassault would have achieved its objective if it got you hooked on the franchise.

Welcome, Mechwarrior. Strap in and power up!

I have not played them yet, but knowing full well what kinds of games they are I just picked up a copy from the locally owned game store. I'll give it a shot sometime.

I also enjoyed Front Mission Evolved alongside the core games AND I'm looking forward to Metal Gear Rising knowing full well it isn't a Metal Gear Solid title (and I have all of them). I'm totally for a franchise trying out different play styles.

I think it was Mechassault that brought me back into the franchise

The sad truth was that Mechassault...like Shadowrun, was probably some executives decision. A "Hey we have these franchises and we are not using them...lets make some games and get them making us money". Yes Microsoft...we thank you for this affront to the franchises that some of us know and love. Damn you Shado...I mean MechAssault...damn you to digital oblivion!

Well, it's not the first time large corporations have tried sucking as much capital out of a franchise as possible. At least it's not as bad as it COULD have been.

If you're going to say this, at least say why. Just saying this without any support is exactly what I'm saying is total BS. Please provide some evidence so we can potentially have a meaningful conversation.

This. Mechassault was not even remotely close to being as bad as some of the trash EA has been pumping out.

Is it anything like jumping into Earth Defense force 2017? Because if it's just crazy shooty fun like EDF then it HAS to be an amazing game. I think I'mma go play Insect Armageddon now

Where is your evidence of how "good" it was? Battletech/Mech has never been an arcade style game.. to me, it played like crap. Frankly, it felt nothing more than any other generic FPS crapped up with "Mechs" (which, while looking the same, did not work the same, and was awkward to play). The 360 torso twist was just stupid (your video up there proves is perfectly). The combat was crap (oh look, one mech just went on a rampage, and killed tons, and he killed each one in under 30 seconds)...

Well, congrats on sucessfully goading me into actaully giving some reasons. Yet for ll your ********, i don't see any reason why we should love it (btw, to see how pathetic it is, just watch the atlas battle at 6:20.. so stupid....).

Honestly, that looks fun. And if that is the kind of gameplay I'm looking for, I don't care if it is branded as part of Battletech stuff. Sometimes I just want some arcade action. I like to be a well-rounded gamer.

don't get a heart attack while you're on your rage session. Calm down, the game isn't for you, to say something sucks is a bit narcissistic isn't it? Your tastes in games isn't the final judgement. There's plenty of people who enjoy that fast paced jump in and play gamestyle. This game isn't a Sim anymore like MechWarrior is. The game was meant for more casual players, which is what makes up the majority of xbox players mind you, to get a taste of BattleTech's world. Who knows, maybe there are a couple of people who after playing this later got the real MechWarrior games and found that they really love the series, hell maybe some of those very people are legendary founder's on this site right now, ready to play an awesome game. Think of it as training wheels on a bike, instead of a horrid monster that eats bikes.

I personally enjoyed playing Mechassault. When I was in.... High school when it first came out me and a couple of my friends used to go at it on multiplayer. As for comparing it to the Mechwarrior series, well, they're apples and oranges. I personally haven't played a Mechwarrior game that I enjoyed since the Mechwarrior 2 series. I'm going to try and pickup Mechwarrior 4 shortly, but as I recall when I played it when it first released I wasn't a fan.

i haven't played mechassault but based on the video,
at least they got the movement(swaying) right in mechassault while running.

except of course the arcadey torso/leg twist.
there is no walk animation.
and no cockpit view.

refer to this thread regarding mech movement/behavior...

The games were fun and at least MA tried to make it seem like it was part of the BT Universe. now MA2 became like a mass effect/halo bastardization of the BT which totally killed it for me.

Still was fun though

The ironic thing is, I am not raging at all. The OP spouted some BS about me having to justify my opinion (since his was much better of course), and I did.

Call me old school, but having to dumb down every game to the "casual" gamer level is silly and frustrating. What is wrong with having gamers use a few brain cells and actually learn a game? If they want brainless, there is plenty of other garbage out there... leave a classic like MW out of it please...

Anyway, as you said, we ALL have our opinions.. OP's is no more valid than mine, or yours, and vice-versa. To me, the game is kiddie crap we (the community) didn't need. I am happy you enjoy it; there are plenty of other crappy games to enjoy as well.

Oh.. i can rage about one thing. All these "casual gamers" is the reason we have to deal with crap like the "Eridani Light Pony".. "Grown" men loving my little pony.... SMH...

when I heard they were making a mechwarrior game for the xbox I thought 'hey cool, maybe it'll be alright' then I played it, honestly, the first thing I thought was 'this isn't mechwarrior, this is like, super mechwarrior on crack' I really couldn't play it, if they had made it a mech based game and left the mechwarrior label off it maybe, just maybe I might've liked it, but as it was hell, mechwarrior 3050 for the SNES was a better game, primarily because while your mech was boss you were stomping around in a madcat mk2 and the typical threat was tanks and elementals, maybe a light mech or two, another heavy or assault mech was effectively a BOSS battle, the way it should be. :P Maybe it wasn't pure mechwarrior but for a game of it's time it was pretty fun and wasn't so far off the beaten path as to be barely recognizeable as a mechwarrior game.
