I have recently tried to access the training area through the home screen. That was simple; the "simulation" went on as normal until I was told to "Hold Left Shift to unlock [my] arms". The issue was that I had already customized my controls and set LShift to VoIP. Instead, the control screen that is posted to the HUD calls the button for unlocking the arms "Unbound". OK, so I set the Unlock button back to LShift, and yet the problem persisted. I reproduce the issue every time I try to access the training area.
System config:
CPU: Intel i7-4790K @4.4GHz
GPU: Gigabyte GTX 760 2x SLI
Board: Asus Z-97 Pro
RAM: 16Gb @1600MHz, 2 sticks.

That one is kinda weird. I think you have to be moving your torso/arms with your mouse while you hit shift. When I stood still and hit shift to unlock nothing happend and the tutorial did not progress. When I randomly swung my mouse around like a maniac and hit shift it suddenly worked.

There's a couple "quirks". Like centering your torso with your legs or vice versa doesn't register unless they are out of alignment to begin with so on a couple of them a simple button press isn't enough.
As above, wave your arms about and it almost always registers from what I can tell.

Another thing is if you are using the shift toggle or the hold shift to unlock the arms, it wants the hold version.

This. I had to remap center legs / body and had to move them out of alignment before the tutorial would progress
