About the Hellbringer: why no one ever mention it?

It's not an assault. Heavy mech, different weight class. You start including the Loki and suddenly things like the Jagermech are fair game too.

Banshees are phenomenal Assault battlemechs. In the right hands, a Banshee can tear a team asunder, granted he himself has proper support. As Sword of Morning said though, they will get focused because of their damage potential.

While Dire Wolves are the current pinacle because of their raw power, I recommend you start off with Zeus', Battlemasters, or Stalkers.

Really though, you should begin with Mediums or Heavies.

Mediums:
Blackjacks
Hunchbacks
Stormcrows
Griffins

Heavies:
Timber Wolf
Hellbringer
Ebon Jaguar
Thunderbolt
Grasshopper.

Clan mechs are very expensive, Ebon Jags though are the cheapest of the clan heavies. They are also the weakest in terms of durability, however.

Take some time to see what mech would absolutely fit you, good luck.

Just get what you like best. Go for the trial mechs and go from there. While all the other advice makes sense and there are great suggestions therein, you might as well just buy what you are excited about owning and then deal with it. After that, check out those recommendations again. I'd say the biggest quibble would be as someone else mentioned: cost. Keep that in mind to master your mechs, you need 3, and either mech you mentioned will take some time. Don't be afraid to go a different direction if your first purchase if it becomes frustrating. IS mechs are cheaper and a good learning tool, so consider those suggestions, even if you are looking to be a clan player. Good luck and have fun!

If you choose Stormcrow, Ebon Jaguar or TimberWolf you will fall under focused fire 'cause this mechs always priority targets as well as Dire Wolf and King Crab. Best beginners option for assault is laser Stalker. This mech is hard, slow and have good firepower. So you will learn to stick with group and withstand much incoming fire.

well, from my experience both in cw and ordinary pugs, focusing fire is as rare as a unicorn
it's not even that people are not willing to focus the most dangerous targets like certain mechs or players, it's that they usually cannot do it having only few mechs to shoot at (and pretty often just one) of which they shoot at that one which is the easiest to aim and/or which is the greatest danger to them instead of trying to aim a less convenient target losing the precious battle time

p.s.

No unicorn could safely roar,
And dash its nose against the door,
Nor sit in peace upon the mat
To eat the dog, or drink the cat.
