Basic every mech before you sell it, even if you hate it. That way if you change your mind in a year and try a different variant you don't have to rebuy it.

To echo and enhance some of the points other people have made:

Never sell 'mechs. Even the variants you don't think you'll use.
- I spent the vast majority of my Cadet Bonus pimping out a Jenner, exploded a bunch, decided I didn't like it, and sold it. Goodbye Cadet Bonus! Later I repurchased it, re-built and upgraded it, and particularly like it.

"Flanking" does not mean running ahead in my light 'mech, attacking the enemy, and exploding.
Hero 'mechs are not better, just different. In some cases, very different than the CBill 'mechs that you like. (eg: The pre-quirk Huginn, and Oxide)

Hero 'mechs are bullet magnets. Particularly the Ilya.
I wish I had known how much I would dislike the Dragon Slayer. It doesn't suit my playstyle at all.

Never ever charge a Daishi head-on, no matter how much you'd like to close the range with it.

Jagermech legs are full of candy.

Don't spend your cadet bonus on an Orion. Or any cbills from whatever source on an Orion.

Or put it another way: The Orion is end game content - use it to prove you are a better mechwarrior by using inferior equipment. So don't bother.

Or maybe: Read the forums first to see which mechs people complain the most about first. No smoke without fire.

I almost gave up MWO 12 months ago because of that one mistake in first mech selection...

Toooooooo late!

Help the Assaults! Leg half of your team.
The backs of your friendlies are a bullet magnet. It doesnt work if you try to alpha their backs and hit the enemy behind them.

well i knew this(frist wave beta invite) but i'm sure this is for new ppl. i would list, make sure to have enough cbills/mc for the stupid 3 mech rule + some extra cbills to mod mech. such a shame we too far down the path to take it away:(

I would have a few things to say to my past self:

1) All hero mechs give Cbill bonus, not just the golden boy, don't buy it. (or kintaros)
2) Do not customize your mech while still in your cadet bonus, save up.
3) Do not sell mechs.
4) Do not buy phoenix pack, spend your money on the clan wave pack. (use all those saved cbills on the phoenix mediums when they release)
5) If must buy a hero go with the Misery, Firebrand or Ilya, do not buy Dragon, Heavy Metal, Arrow, Firestarter, they do not retain their purchase value or usability.
6) All that saved MC, hold out for the premium time sale and pickup a year for 12500MC.
7) And lastly One-shot camos only, do not buy that fractal unlock for the Atlas, you don't switch camo around map to map, this isn't that type of game. :(

I know you're kidding, but in my defense anyway: I've dropped in every chassis in the game except the Black Knight. Aside from playing with a good team (though I play solo a lot too), I don't do anything to pad my stats. Today I've played LCT-1M, ADR in progress of leveling (my fourth) and finished mastering my third and fourth Zeus. Even dusted off a Commando last night for a few drops.

LOL. Maybe a little. :P Mostly had other leveling projects ongoing and decided to finish a few off while the BLK gets its hitboxes fixed. That new CDA is going to shove everything out of the way come Tuesday, though...

Mouse sensativity is to high, turn it down to half default and fine tune from there. Got that from one of the video's from Mack at Worth A Buy actually.

Did you start with the Orion too? You have my sympathies.

Though to be honest, I couldnt hit friendlies in the back... ANY sort of terrain/obstacle caught anything shot from those low slung arms (I had the ON1-V with 1E and 1M in each arm. Though the 1B slot was fairly high on the shoulder - it shot over most small objects).

Make sure you're getting over 30 fps on day one or go upgrade your rig before continuing.

That speed = life early in your mech career.

My first mech was a Cataphract 4x, max engine size 255. Max speed un-tweeked, 59's kph.

I can't tell you how many times Jenners and Spiders ate me for breakfast, lunch, and diner.

Trial by fire early, for sure.

Stick with a small series of mechs, and keep farming until you can afford new ones instead of selling them off when you grow tired of the current chassis, because you *will* want to revisit it later, and buying new ones every time is expensive.

I will second this. My first year playing I only had a laptop. 20 FPS was a good day and it dipped to 12 FPS quite regularly.

Do not let your very young son play on your account, and especially if he is cheering the most when his own mech is blown to pieces. 500-600 matches like that will get you so low in tiers you will have a hard time getting back from it. On the positive side I may have brought us a new mechwarrior fan for the future.

I wish id known that all my money would be taken to develop the game in a direction chosen by the minority of players and that id end up watching forums for signs of life and hope that maybe it would be worth playing again.

Had i known i wouldn't of spent so much.
