It all comes down to whether you think you can [and fully intend to] stay 400-500m away from your intended targets, and if you can aim well.

Its situational, in city fighting close quarters the AC20's superior damage per shot especially when used in an Alpha strike I would give the nod. In more open terrain with its longer range and shorter cycle time I would give the AC10 the edge. I have to give the AC10 a slight edge over the AC20 in general, but it's close.

Tend to be a little impatient with the AC/10 so I don't seem to be consistent with it... might have something to do with the ROF. I lean more towards the AC/20 on the YLW myself... just hate its firing lag.

Both of these weapons require vastly different approaches to be successful.

Personally, I tend to switch between Gauss and AC/20 on my Founders Hunchback. Most of the time I stick with AC/20 though. Usually I can manage to time my entry into the fight in such a way that I'm often overlooked by the enemy while they pound away on an Atlas or something, and I just go to town and start owning. I got 5 (almost 6) kills last night like this in a match, which we unfortunately lost because we had an afk Atlas pilot. If you're sneaky, you can do a ton of damage with an AC/20.

I haven't used the AC/10 much, mostly because I'm not particularly impressed with PPCs, which sounds a bit strange, but PPCs and AC/10s do exactly the same amount of damage, and behave pretty similarly. I was able to get used to using PPCs though and got pretty good with them, so I imagine I could do the same with an AC/10. I also like the pairing of AC/10 and PPC on a medium that is fast enough to dictate range on most mechs, and plenty of ammo and probably double heat sinks to keep things cool.

What do you think?

EDIT: Can you believe it - I misremembered my analysis - AC/20 are actually more damage/tonnage efficient than AC/10. Ooops. Edited the post.

All things equal, the AC/20 is the better choice.

Things that can make things unequal is basically anything that means your mech will not be "filled up" weight/crit-wise or more likely hardpoint-wise with AC/20s and you need to add additional weapons or equipment that you are not interested in.

But just damage / tonnage (with heat sinks and ammo) wise, the AC/20 is better than the AC/10, and sufficiently so that the range may not matter to you.

Of course, if you could fit AC/10 or AC/20, you have to ask yourself if you also could make a Gauss work, which beats them both.

The Gauss. =P

But I voted AC20. Most fights are relatively short range engagements in MWO (excluding missile support) which reduces the range benefits of the AC10 and they also tend to be harder to hit at their maximum range anyway. The AC20 packs a meaner alpha and weighs only marginally more (12t vs 10t). You get slightly less overall damage (15x10=150 vs 20x7=140) and damage per heat (10:3, 20:7) however.

As my old dad used to say... "Double barrelled shotgun? If you can't hit it with one barrel, two won't do you any good."

(AC/20)
