Later in the match our last mech, still in good shape but had taken some damage took what looked like a glancing hit from a different mech [the black knight was dead] and was likewise destroyed via side torso destruction.
Has anyone else run into this? Were we both just hit with more than we thought? To me, both cases looked like a light brush that wouldn't even bother a locust and boom., mechs destroyed.

So, when you're killed, take a screenshot of the death screen, and add that to your post.
For example: Maybe someone tapped you with dual gauss to your side torso at roughly the same time? There are LOTS of mechs than can one-shot a light via side torso destruction, particularly if you've got poor armor distribution. How much armor did you have on that side torso, front and rear? there's lots of questions here

Best case, if you frontload your armor 100% is that the side torso on a Locust has 30 points, less if you decide you want to have some armor on the back. 3 large pulse lasers is 33 points of damage that takes .67 seconds to happen. So yes, a glancing blow from enough weapons can kill one.

Critical hits to internal components will echo 15% to the structure, too, so the attacker doesn't *need* 38 damage to kill you, either, it could be less.
Now, using a randomly thrown together BL-6-KNT build (not optimized, just threw it together):
53 damage alpha. Even with only roughly .75s of burn time, and no critical hits, you're dead.

If you're asking if it's possible to be instagibbed in this game, it is not only possibly, but common.

There's all sorts of strange stuff going on, silent damage being one of my favourites.

A Firestarter has at most 32 armor on a side torso, which as I recall gives it 16 internals. If he hit your rear torso you might have only had 4 armor plus 16 internals, or 20 points of damage to destroy you. Note that hit boxes can be wonky, so it is entirely possible that he hit your rear armor from the front.
As far as the "glancing hit" goes, graphically weapons are sometimes combined by the game engine if they're close together. A Black Knight firing 6 medium lasers might look like it only fired 2, thus tricking you into thinking it was a glancing hit. It was in fact a full alpha, and that 30-pt alpha is more than capable of destroying a Firestarter in one hit to the right location.

Didn't look like a bot (no perfect instant aim on my ct, nothing like that) It looked like overcharged lasers, quad damage or smt. I'm sure it was not normal. I know i takes some time to kill a mech, even today with laservomit and low TTK the lasers need some time to do the damage but my death was instant. Faster than facetanking DWF in a locust... Maybe lag...

So often when watching another player, you are not exactly seeing what they see since there is a slight delay due to how MWO works. Host State Rewind then tries to make matches as fair as possible, so what we see is sometimes not what the server is keeping track of.
Then with current quirks dealing enough damage to a light is very easy if the shooter has a good angle, and/or the light pilot made a mistake.

- match where my Raven was targeted on side torso even when hiding it behind a pillar. The guy on the other team couldnt miss it. Literally.
- Next match my Raven down to dual guass side torso hit single shot. Same match at the end a different dual gauss KC head shots one of our mechs as he is coming straight on then head shots him again but the lead was off so he hit side torso. That same KC was helpless to defend himself from the rest of the team that got to him though. Such an amazing shot but cant even fire once except his chosen target?
- Next match front side torso taken out from behind. Clearly from behind.
Playing lights because queue needs them. Was a tough go though. Managed to do ok over all but barely.
If I was to make a guess I would say the queues are infested with bots at the moment and an epic ban wave is on the way. Could be entirely wrong.
