[Death Proof]

Use a trackball mouse and a joystick.

Maybe even a steering wheel. I hear that gets good results.

The extra buttons are usually not for the 3 to infinity weapon groups in my case. They are for the often used functions like turning on secondary visions. Not having to remove a finger from WSAD (or any buttons you've set for movements) is nice to have and will be greatly appreciated in critical moments.

I'll chime in with a "No" also. But I use a trackball, so I may be a niche viewpoint. I build my mechs with 3 weapon groups, 4 at the max, because that's how many buttons are on my trackball. Not having a scroll wheel zoom is the only real downside for me.

i wouldn't mind the extra buttons to fill in for maybe the 3 or 4 keys i actually need to go to the keyboard to hit (throttle controller has many many buttons). my dying but too stubborn to go logitech laser mouse from 10 years ago has 5 buttons, but only 4 of them are useful for in-game (wheel buttons are hard to hit in a pinch on most mice). 4 groups is kind of tricky for me to use. 3 seems to be the sweet spot. usually the spares are for 'too hot to fire the normal groups' type scenarios, where you fire one set of 3 or the other depending on what your temp is.

I have an Intellimouse Explorer 3.0. It's a standard mouse with two thumb buttons, giving you five buttons to work with. I have yet to find a mech loadout that requires more than 5 weapon groups.

I don't use consumables at all, so 5 buttons are enough for me.

I love this mouse so much, I bought a one for my desktop, a second one for my laptop and a backup in case something happens to either of them.






The key selling point for me is the location of the key labelled "Weapon Group 3".

The design allows you to control it with your index finger, which can also control the Left Mouse Button - and it makes it very easy to fire those two weapon groups simultaneously with just one finger.

Software is solid, and the weights it comes with are a nice touch for added comfort (I thought they were a gimmick before I bought it, but I definitely developed a preference for a specific weight and location of that weight).

There was a recent reddit thread and it turns out a huge % of the best players use this mouse (I do as well...). It's only a tiny bit more expensive than a Death Adder and vastly superior. Highly recommended.

My problem with mice is that I need to roll then. Hence I use a trackball.

Now if only Logitech would release a right-handed G13, and with a ball instead of stick.

No a 4 button mouse and wheel should do. I do have a razor naga but that is because I am a fan of razor and it is for my very nice desktop.

I use a joystick although I also have a Logitech G300 mouse (for other games) which was like 25$ and is got all the gaming adjustments and 9 buttons. Comfortable, easy. Joystick is Thrustmaster 16000m which MWO supports very well, but most players go with the mouse. I did have to open up the 16000m and zip-tie two of the return spring coils together before it became super accurate.

I use a normal 2 button mouse.

Group 1: LMB
Group 2: RMB
Group3: MWHEEL
Group4: E
Group5: F
Group6: G

Works fine for me, I try to keep most mechs simple with 3 or 4 groups.

I've stopped using a button to change DPI up and down, and have settled only on 2 DPI for my MWO profile - so I only need a downshift key for that. (And that DPI cycle key in my image is wrong, I've rebound it).

I rarely, if ever, use 4 weapon groups. I just don't really have a need for it.

Well, it's less about the weapon groups and more about other functions like DPI shift, push to talk, consumables, etc.

It lets you strike a balance with the number of things controlled by your left hand - which also needs to control your movement, by moving some of that over to your mouse hand.

I use a merc stealth myself, I don't like the G13 that I bought. The keys are too chunky and to similar in size for my preference.

Never heard of a rechargeable mouse but you can get rechargeable batteries to use in a wireless mouse.

I would absolutely not recommend mapping more than two weapon groups to your mouse. Reason being that moving your hand or hitting any button not right on top of your mouse throws off your aim.

Map keys around WASD to all the other functions you need. Personally I have groups 1-2 on the mouse, center mouse for zoom, 3 on alt, 4 on capslock, 5 on tilde, and 6 on left shift (usually for TAG).
