I came back to the game today to find myself with some goodies: A Cicada, an Enforcer, and a Wolverine.
A surprise that was very welcomed. I also noticed my drop deck tonnage was back at 250, so I have the weight to carry some wolverines now. I have experience with Hunchbacks, Stalkers, and the Wolverine-6K. I'm eager to try out my new WVR-7DL and if it is fun, I can carry it on my dropship. a Stalker and 3 Wolverines would be nice.
I've found some info on the other Wolverine variants, but the 7D seems missing. I'm also clueless as to what variant I might want as my third for mastery purposes. I guess what I'm looking for is a basic rundown of how the different variants work and what's good for them.

The 7K and 6K are probably the best ones because they have the most energy hardpoints, so a bit more versatility on whether you want to go with a light hunting build or an SRM and Laser battery.
The 7D is pretty hard to build for. I would probably just focus on the two ballistic hardpoints and do two AC or UAC 5's, and get a head laser for good measure.
Just remember to put endo and ferro on just about all of them.

Yes the 7D is tricky to load out. Having only a single energy mount in the head means you can't even fit an (ER)LL, let alone anything bigger. So you'd need to focus on either the 2 Missile or the 2 Ballistic points. Going double Lrm10 leaves you without good back-up weaponry and heavier SRM's means a weaker Ballistic weapon.
At the same time going double Ballistics means you don't really have the tonnage for anything else.
I myself are doing a somewhat balanced build. AC/10 for mid-range fire, 2 SRM2 (nice rapid reload and good accuracy) with a MPL for back-up. It's.......okay-ish, but it has worked the best for me so far.

The best thing I have found for the 7D so far is to run UAC5/MPL/2xSRM6 with an XL300. Use the UAC to poke at range and then the SRMs to wreck face and fade. It has had mixed results. if I get enough plinks off with the UAC I do well.
I tried using the MASC but took it out almost immediately as I couldn't stand the 3 ton loss for the minimal gain.

Close but not fast enough. With the way everyone tries to alpha CTs these days, pretty much all my mediums, sans hunch, run XLs:

XLs make me nervous, but I guess I could give it a try. I've got C-Bills to burn.

I run XLs in my Hunchies anyway. By the time the hunch is dead (I don't own an -SP), I don't have the firepower left to bother with, and running an XL lets me carry firepower and have speed. I'd rather do double the damage for the first half of the game and be dead the second than last 3/4 of the way through and be struggling to keep up with the group.

Forgive me if this is absolute crap, but I've never really "built" a 'mech before. My Hunchbacks pretty much built themselves. Is this close to what we are getting at here?

Remove the extra heatsinks, add a ton of UAC ammo, upgrade to endo steel, and upgrade the engine to a 270 with some jump jets, or a 280.
Some quick tips for building mechs. As long as you are around 40% cooling efficiency heat management should be a piece of cake. Endo is better than ferro for weight savings in nearly every situation, so always upgrade to endo, and sometimes to ferro if the build needs it. For ballistics 3 tons of ammo is the sweet spot for a single gun, add two tons of ammo for each additional gun. SRMs can usually get away with one ton of ammo for each launcher but you may need to be conservative with your shot selection.

Just make sure you get a versatile engine so you aren't wasting c-bills. XL280 and 300 work for a ton of builds.

After another couple of days grinding skills, I am finding I really do not like the 7D. Not enough firepower for a hit and fade mech, and not enough hardpoints for really anything. If I was still making the choice for a third Wolvie to elite, this would definitely not be the one I bought.
